Burns bright; slow to warm up,
By

I've purchased these lights from a local retail outlet and replaced my regular outdoor incadescent floodlights with them. They do burn very brightly-just as brightly as the incadescent bulbs-but take a very long time to warm up, especially in the winter (NJ). I would never let this discourage purchasing and using these bulbs, but if you think indoor bulbs take a while, prepare yourself!

Better than most CFL floods,

Like others have said, these do take a little while to warm up. However, even immediately after being turned on, they provide a lot more light than the TCP 14019 - 1R4019-27K 19W R40 2700K Flood Screw Base Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb that these replaced - and warm up a lot quicker. They've also outlasted all of the TCP bulbs. They're also painfully bright once they warm up fully - they're supposed to be 90 watt equivalent, but they seem to be a bit brighter than the 90 watt incandescents in the next room, and they're far brighter than the cheap bulbs we had in this room before.
There's no "great" CFL flood on the market right now - they all take their time warming up, I'm assuming due to the fact that these are designed to handle the heat of being in recessed lights. I did find them on sale locally for a bit cheaper than anyone online is selling them for, so that helped.

This is a very bright CFL flood bulb. It keeps my kitchen lit very well. It sticks out a little from the recessed socket where the bulb fits in and my wife thinks it makes it look a little bit ugly. It is certainly larger than the smaller wattage bulbs. Immediate on (low light) that brightens up to very bright. Overall, I am satisfied.

I know energy saving i.e. "green" is all the rage but this product really sucks. I've got some of the regular CFL replacements in a couple of table lamps and they take a little getting used to but they're okay. GE's attempt at comverting a flood lamp falls dismally short. Being a somewhat energy concious consumer I decided to try one in a hallway after the standard bulb burned out so I forked out almost eight bucks for a "60W equivalent". The bulb I was replacing was 65W incandescent. My personal assessment is that this is more like "10W equivalent" and it casts a ghoulish white light. I can't imagine where I could use this. I just now replaced it with an incandescent and I'm back to happy. Maybe their "120W equivalent" bulb would shine more light but there's no way I could stand the too-white light. They make their standard flourescents in different shades i.e. warmth so why not these??

We all know we need to move to CFLs for energy efficiency - for our own finances and the environment. But for those of us with "can lights", the visible part of the bulb has to look right! This product solves those problems - and if it lives up to its 6-year-life prediction, it will more than pay for itself.
Walmart and Target, etc., have these in stock, but sometimes only one or two! I bought a case so I would always have them around and not be tempted to backslide to incandescent!!

Low wattage but takes forever to start up,

GE needs to go back to the drawing board on this. Unless you remember to turn on the light 10 minutes before you will need it, it won't work. Once fully warmed up, it is plenty bright, and if it were suitable for outdoor use, would be fine for an outdoor light on a timer. But indoors in a room - no, unless it is on all the time. I replaced mine with the high wattage floodlight that I had removed, and hope within a year there will be a quicker-starting alternative.

Won't fit standard fixtures with motion controls so I may have to use them in flood asm with reflectors in the shop, time will tell I suppose....

In designing a cfl to replace an incandescent flood light to mount in a ceiling fixture, you would think that GE, with millions of dolars at its disposal would design a cfl that warmed up quickly enough to at least approximate the performance of the item it replaces. With outside temperature in the fifties (F), and inside temperature at the site of use about 70-75, these things take about three minutes to equal the brightness of normal 90-watt floods. If I want to see what I'm doing when I shave, I need to turn on the light minutes ahead of time. Unacceptable. Maybe the Chinese can do better.
