When reviewing a how-to book it's always best to completely read it first and, just maybe, try an item or two. That being said this book gives instuctions labeled Popcorn Stitch in at least two places, pages 8 and 27. The instructions are completely different! Those given on page 8 are labeled CLUSTER in other instruction books and even in another location in this book! Also, I've never seen or produced the light and open look of CLOUD NINE (page 19) using single crochet, that sure looks like double crochet throughout to this crafter. Also buy much more yarn than you think for the STADIUM BLANKET and, if you follow the book's instructions, don't be surprised to find that you're working from side to side instead of the end to end specified. JIFFY Thick and Quick measures 1/3 inch thick and chaining 121 will not give you 48 inches but about 67, (do the math), and when you add your fringe the blanket portion will measure 65 inches from fringe to fringe. Beautiful items, ideas, and pictures but some experience is required to realize what's happening when you try to reproduce these items.

Have you seen all those new chunky and bulky yarns in the store? Have you tried any of them? If not, 48-Hour Afghans is the perfect book to get you started. There are twelve crochet patterns from which to choose so one is sure to peak your interest.

Each pattern has a full-color, full-page photo of the afghan along with clear instructions. There is a materials list that gives the brand name of the yarn used in that particular pattern so you are sure to get the same great results they did. There are three pages of general instructions including how to fringe your afghan.

As a craft teacher, this would be a good book to teach beginning Crocheters as the yarn is big as is the hook and the stitches on most are simple. The student would be able to create an afghan in a couple of class sessions if they put in some "homework" time between the classes. There are more complicated ones included as well so you could use the book for follow-up classes too.

These patterns have turned out a little more difficult than I'd imagined, but they're worth the effort. 56 Hour Afghans would be more realistic.

The shawls and lap robes in this little book are done up in bulky yarns with large hooks. I just ordered some very beautiful chenille yarn to make what is called the "Mink," a lucious, soft and comforting wrap, especially wonderful for friends and family who are battling serious medical issues. With every stitch I think of my friend who is undergoing treatment for Multiple Myeloma. There are prayer shawl books, but none as easy as this, nor as quick. Sometimes time is of the essence.

I'm a novice crocheter so I am on the lookout for nice and easy afghan crochet pattersn, so I was pleased to purchase and read 48-Hour Afghans by Rita Weiss. Her book contains 12 crochet patterns and most of the patterns use very easy stitches. About the most difficult pattern I saw was one using the Popcorn stitch. The following patterns are included in her book:

Stadium Blanket
Autumn Haze
Think Mink
Waterfall
Pretty Petunia Throw
Red Velvet
Cloud Nine
True Elegance Throw
Twister
Bright and Beautiful
Zebra Stripes Fun in the Sun

I'm already planning to crochet the Stadium Blanket as I love the colors, texture and according to the book it makes a thick warm blanket. Sounds like a perfect Christmas gift for someone special.

Recommend.
