Book Description

A humorous and evocative coming-of-age story about the timeless mysteries of dating, friendships, school, parents, and finding your place in the world...

It's the 1980s, and Will McCarthy has two things on his mind. One is the dream of becoming a writer. The other is the hope that someday he'll break out of Abby Carlisle's "friend zone"--no easy task, considering her cynical views on relationships and life in general.

Will sets out to find his voice as a writer, experiencing the rewards and the letdowns that come with it. Inspired by a teacher and some of his favorite writers, he learns the value of being true to yourself, even when there's a price to pay.

Abby wants the freedom to choose her own direction in life, despite her parents' intention to do it for her. Taking a stand will require her to find courage she didn't know she had.

As they go through high school, Will and Abby have some life-changing moments, proving that incredible things can occur when and where you least expect them...if you just let it happen.

Editorial Reviews

"The story is one that could have easily been plucked from John Hughes' brain." -

"I devoured this book and its many period-accurate details. The hair and clothes are right. The music is right. But most importantly, Tompkins has managed to capture the attitude of youth in the 80s." -

"The book is loaded with the music, movies and TV of the 80s and is a fun trip down memory lane for any 80s nuts. Throw in a good story with interesting characters, and it was the perfect pick for my recent trip to the beach." -

"I loved it, I didn't want it to end and I found the notebook carrying, wannabe writer Will hilarious. As the story is written from his perspective you can't help but cheer him on, he is relatable and extremely witty, I laughed out loud many times during this book. The rest of the characters are great and just as real including that of Abby who is one cool and switched on chick." - Everything80sUK

I really enjoyed the story, predictable as it was I thought the story was fun and loved all the flashbacks to my high school and college years. The movies and music were what define the 80s and this book captured that perfectly. It is a quick read and I found that I didnt want it to end.
