I just acquired this toy, to relive my days with my spirograph, of which I had many fond memories. I thought, "Gee, I have so many cool pens for scrapbooking, now and glitter pens- Woo Hoo! What fun! I tried the three colored pencils that come with the set, and quickly bought a set with 24 colors made by Crayola- nice! More subtle color variations! The liquid gel pens I hoped to use didn't work well, because they didn't dry fast enough, and the ink smeared. So I got a set of Flair pens, which have very vivid colors, and they work very nicely!
The thing I like best about the set it that the holes are many different shapes and in many positions all around the wheels, and create many shapes Spirograph never thought of! It's great to see how a teardrop shape will work, and a star and many others. The wheel frame is used with the wheel underneath it, which locks it down and keeps the wheel in it's tracks better. I have really had fun with it, and am happy to recommend it!

On a recent trip to a local store, I found a Hypotrochoid Art Drawing Set, which reminded me of the Spirograph that I played with as a child. The packaging was sealed, but it was on sale, so I went ahead and purchased it. Wish that I had seen the images here on Amazon first - that one comes with 6 gears and 3 frames - but it's actually 2 sets of the same 3 gears, and 2 of the frames are the same size. (The holes in the gears are small, so only the 3 pens that come with and Pilot Precise Extra Fine V5 pens - which are more expensive than the set - work.)

Next, I found this Create Your OWN Spiral ART kit at another local store. Also sealed, this one has 2 frames and 5 gears - problem: because of the teeth on the gears, only 2 large gears fit in the large frame, and 3 small gears fit in the small frame. The teeth on the gears are large, so they don't really slip the way that the old Spirograph kits did. The shapes are interesting and most pens work with it, so it works pretty well.

Thought I had finally found my answer when I saw the Cra-Z-art Spiral Set from the photo on the box, and the product photo that shows gears of multiple shapes (football, plus sign, etc). The set that I received included 3 frames (round, oval and kidney bean shaped) and 7 ROUND gears of varying sizes (the number of teeth are marked on each gear - 17, 18, 22, 27, 29, 30 & 33.) No other shaped gears - just round. One good thing about this set is that the holes in the gears are large, so just about any pen will work. For the price of this set (and since I'm an Amazon Prime member, I received free shipping) I'm not unhappy.

But at this point, I wish that I had put all the money that I had spent on all 3 sets and the Pilot Pens together to find an old, real spirograph set.

We bought this for our 4 & 5 year old to try help them improve their writing skills. This one is so hard to do, my husband and I had difficulty keeping it going. The teeth do not grip like the way the old Spirograph did. We were very disappointed with the product!!

This is not like the old days, it's almost impossible to keep it going and make it look nice. It was hard for me to do, and I'm an artist!

We bought this for a very artistic child and she lost interest in minutes... don't waste your money, its not anything near as fun as the old spirograph we played with as kids.

This is a poor quality knock-off of the original Spirograph toy that was around from the 1970's to early 1990's. Go on Ebay and get an original Spirograph. I did and I love it! It is absolutely worth the money, even if it is missing a couple wheels. They come with so many options.

This art kit is terrible. As a parent, I could barely do it, much less little hands. My child was so excited then very frustrated. Do not buy

This looked like a mini-Spirograph to me and I bought it for my grandchild. She is enjoying it, but I was disappointed in it, comparing it to the toy from my own childhood. The templates do not track well, although there are some interesting shapes. I wish I would have just bought a Spirograph.
