A great way to get out into the country,
By A Customer
This review is from: 4WD Adventures: Colorado (Paperback)
In my experience, 4WD Adventures: Colorado rates among the top in the travel/guide books genre. Born and raised back east, I recently graduated from college and moved out to Denver. When I first went up to the mountains looking for peace and silence, I found that I was still in the midst of hikers, picnickers, families and many others. Seeing as I drive an SUV and I was looking for a way to get out into the backcountry, I decided to try out offroading. After looking at a few guides, I decided on 4WD Adventures: Colorado to lead me out into the Rockies. Before I got out on the road I found myself reading through the short history sections on some of the old outlaws and looking at pictures of Colorado's wildlife. It was really good reading which is often hard to come by in travel books. When my friends and I finally got out on our first offroad adventure, the directions laid out in the book were flawless. They pointed out interesting sights and side roads along the way and kept us on course. I was really very impressed with the book's accuracy and succinct description. They got us out to a place in the Western Rockies where we camped out and saw no one for a week. This was the Colorado I had moved out west to see. I think the book did a great job getting me out into the country. We all had a great time. What's even better now that I've driven my first trail is that I have 68 more to go. Definitely a great book!

An excellent guide for beginners and experts!,

Although I'm fairly new to off-roading, I always try to take the beaten path. This book is EXCELLENT for those like me. Not only does it give you excellent histories of the areas you travel through, but it gives you difficulty and scenic ratings (on a 1-10 scale). Point-by-point mileage markers are a plus, too. If you have a 4x4 SUV and you want to use it for what it was designed for, this book is for you! It won't lead you into destroying your SUV; instead, you'll bond with it off road!

I do not own this book, but had read my friends quite a bit, when we actually took our first 4WD trip, we used a competitors book. It paled in comparison, this book is so much more informative. The directions are flawless and the photos and histories it details make it much easier to find the trail that suits your interests.

4WD Adventures: Colorado,

This review is from: 4WD Adventures: Colorado (Paperback)
I bought this book because of all the awards and positive reviews it's got. Well, when I saw all the color photos and detailed trail descriptions, I wasn't disappointed! This is a great book for exploring Colorado's outback and learning about all the things to see along the trail and history too. I especially liked the addition of color photos and descriptions of wildflowers, birds and animals you might see along the trails. For GPS owners, this book is a MUST (although you certainly don't have to own one)! Every ghost town and major intersection is marked so you can program and follow the whole trail. This is fun reading...on or off the road! Definite A++++ rating for SUV owners and their families. I also bought a copy for my dad and two more as gifts for friends. Great book that's excellent value for the price!

Wonderful!,

I really like this book: Of course it's beautiful with all those spectacular color photographs. And it's very useful with all the most up-to-date information on Colorado 4x4 trails. But more than that, the book has "heart". Clearly the Masseys love the subject matter and it shows, making it a pleasure to read and a delight to use. I recommend it heartily.

I was a little hesitant to buy the book because of the price, but I am glad that I did! The authors did a great job of researching and documenting the trails, and I really enjoyed the historical facts of the ghost towns. It's a great guide for any four-wheel jaunt in the hills , and it's also a great book to curl up with in front of the fire!

I have already tried two trails, a 3 and a 5 rating. I found the book to be accurate and easy to use. Can't wait to try other trails.

Informative book, great roads description, could use more pics but very good addition to my existing 4wd library as it contains few trails not listed anywhere else. Perfect for beginner offroaders, also great companion to Well's books!

One of the best out there...,

This book is organized very well and is extremely useful and accurate. The one thing I wish it did have was an overal list of trails by difficulty/scenic value. If you also buy the Wells book, you will be adventuring for quite a while.

I recently used this book for a back country trip in Colorado, after years of using Massey & Wilson's similar book for Arizona. I highly recommend them. The GPS coordinates, odometer readings from two directions on each trail, and difficulty ratings make these invaluable tools for navigating back roads. The local histories and lore make for fun reading even when you're at home.
