Dennis hits his subjects head on and doesn't mince words. His AERC (American Endurance Ride Conference) record speaks for itself, with several thousand miles riding horses with many miles, most in the top 5, and several best condition awards to his credit. This book is a must read for anyone wanting to take their horse to the "next level" of endurance riding/racing.

A little too technical for me, and I didn't care for the writing style. It's written for an advanced endurance rider. I would have liked to have seen pictures, for example he writes at great length describing the conformation of his ideal mount. I would have liked it followed up by a real picture and not hand drawn.

As long-time, usually Top Ten, but not typically a 1st place or B.C. rider, I thought that Dennis's book opened up a new realm of possibilities for the experienced endurance rider. Lots of ancedotes, which we probably all can relate to, really helped the book move along. Solid, realistic advice, too. I doubt I will come up with the funds to buy a "Euro-cizer", though. I think that that one piece of expensive equipment is a "game-changer" as far as allowing the endurance horse to not only win competitions, but in some cases, exceed performance levels gained through more traditional means. (Yes, I'm the poor soul who does the long, slow distance, day after day after day. ) Does the ownership and usage of the device make it a fair competition? I'll save that debate for another time......That said, ALL ENDURANCE RIDERS, ESPECIALLY THOSE WITH EXPERIENCE, SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!!

Sorry, I had to give the book 4.9 stars instead the "winning 5". Just a personal bias, though. I thought the book needed better editing. Most E-riders wouldn't find the mis-use of the words "to" and "too", (plus some needed punctuation) a big deal. The good information in the book more than makes up for the occasional English error. Again, aLL ENDURANCE RIDERS, ESPECIALLY THOSE WITH EXPERIENCE, SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!!!

When I want advice, I want it from the best in the business. Dennis and his wife/shoer Sue are indeed two of the best in the sport of endurance. They have accrued literally thousands of tough and competitive endurance miles, and in this book, they share some of their best strategies for moving up a level in endurance.
If you want to improve your horse's performance, this book has strategies to make it happen. Dennis covers not just how to train your horse, but how you as a rider can make a horse's job easier. I like his systematic and thoughtful way of reasoning about shoeing, confirmation, and training. It's really apparent that this book is a culmination of many years of experimentation and effort.
I'm impatiently waiting for 5th Gear. Let's GO!

This is a great book! It's also a fun read. It covers all the bases that the AERC Endurance Rider's Handbook hits but in a significantly more thorough and advanced fashion.
This is my third year in the sport and while I've prepared very hard and been well-exposed, this book reveals various insights to successful competition at the highest level. The point of view is from an athlete and competitor that loves and protects his horses. The themes of competitiveness, preparation, and the primacy of the horse's well-being are developed and very beneficial. I got a lot out of this book and consider it a competitive advantage.

Anyone with a sound horse and enough time to condition can enjoy endurance riding and do reasonably well. Competing is another matter. Dennis Summers knows all about that, and he shares his strategic thinking, his attention to critical detail, and what he has learned over the years about horsemanship, hoof care and starting young horses on the trail. The style is pungent, the pace is fast, and there is no preaching. Really, why would you NOT read this book?

Great read - enjoyed the candid details about horses and the sport itself. Funny and clever with thoughtful insight into choosing a horse, training it and maybe riding in the Tevis Cup.

Very informative, honest, humorous, motivating and inspiring book. Even the non-endurance person can use this book to reach their athletic goals.
