These Drinkrox are a perfect gift for a whiskey or bourbon drinker. They will put a slight chill on your booze without watering it down, which, according to my father-in-law, is a better way to drink than on the rocks. One thing is for sure: if you're spending a lot of money on great Scotch, you're going to taste it better if it's not too watered down (which often happens if you over-ice).

Personally, when I use these stones, I like to add a cold splash of water to the drink to open up the flavor a bit, but that's personal preference.

All in all, this is a solid product at a more reasonable price that what other better-know brands/stores sell.

I found that the drink rox worked exactly as advertised: the temperature of the whiskey dropped about seven to twelve degrees. People who enjoy scotch or bourbon with ice may prefer these roxs since they do not dilute the drink. However, obviously, those who prefer ice because ice cools more and adds water, which they prefer, will not enjoy the roxs. Additionally, drinkers of mixed drinks who prefer their drinks very cold may not like the 7 to 12 degree temperature drop, feeling it is insufficient. But what is significant is that no one is fooled: you get exactly what is adverted.

The vendor of this set of nine WHISKEY STONES by DrinkRox sent them to me for purposes of evaluation. They are marketed as a way of keeping spirits like bourbon or scotch cool, but for my review I used plain old cold water in a glass "rocks" glass. I was not warned away from using them to keep opaque liquids like Ensure or orange juice cool, but was not exhorted to use them for that either, and decided not to. The "stones" are really dice-shaped cubes in neutral shades of gray and comprised of soapstone, not granite (a distinction the vendor uses as a selling point). Currently the price for the set of nine stones in a small velveteen bag runs half or less of the "personal-luxury" price of about forty dollars they used to sell for. Instructions are simple: wash off the "rox" but do not dry them, and put them in the freezer. A bag of nine is probably sufficient for the contents of two glasses. They will keep the liquid contents of a glass cooler than nothing at all, and since there is nothing to leak there is no dilution by water as there would be with ice cubes. I think these DrinkRox will serve as a nice small present for a friend or for oneself, especially if dilution of spirits by ice cubes is a problem. Be aware, though, that the cubes' cooling power is not sufficient to chill a drink, or to keep a cold drink cold all evening.

*Disclosure: I was contacted by DrinkRox and given a sample of this product specifically for the purpose of giving my thoughts on it.*

Want your beverage cooled but not with ice, which will dilute it as it warms up? These may be for you. About the same size and shape as a large die, the whole set cools 6oz of liquid at a time. With rounded corners and lighter weight than the similar products made of granite, these offer a bit more protection for one's glass. How effective are they at cooling? I drew up 4oz of booze in a glass and measured. The starting temp was 78.6 degrees, and 5 minutes after the Drinkrox were added, the temp was down to 66.4 degrees. Leaving the glass on the counter, I continued to monitor, to see how long these soapstone cubes could keep the temp down. At the 15 minute mark, the temp had gone up to to 68.6, a rise of roughly 2 degrees. Fifteen minutes later, the temp was up to 69.6 degrees, just an increase of one degree. At the close of an hour, 70.1 degrees was the final temp. Not being a whiskey sipper, I could be wrong, but 45 minutes plus of cooling power seems to be long enough to finish off a glass.
