2for1 - Can't Beat That!,
This review is from: 4th Edition Player's Handbook Collection: 4th Edition D&D Core Rulebooks (Hardcover)
I'm not going to discuss the four way war (4e-vs-3e-vs-2e-vs-1e) that has the D&D world so often divided. Nor will I get into the merits of those systems - They're all superbly fun games. I'm just going to review this particular set of books for a really fun game.
Now, I don't own this gift set (yet), but I do own both these books (I bought the first [PH1] in the original 3 "Core" book Gift set, and the PH2 when it came out in early 2009.) For the players in your group that don't have books, or if you're thinking of introducing someone new to D&D, this is a superb deal to get people playing. (Although, they may need some Dice...) Or if you're a DM like me, you might consider getting this set for yourself just to have extra copies at the game table. PH1 gives the player all the basic rules of character creation, Race and Class Selection, Skills & Feats, Equipment, and Combat Rules. PH2 introduces several "new" races and classes, as well as more options, including Backgrounds and new Skills/Feats/Equipment. As for the discount on Wizard's "D&D Insider"... Well I don't use it because many of the D&D Tools aren't Mac OS compatible (DARN YOU WOTC!), but $12 is a great savings for that service (which includes Character and Monster generators, subscriptions to DRAGON and DUNGEON magazine, and a host of tools they're still working on). Personally, though, I think a set of Polyhedral Dice would have been more appropriate. As a whole, this set is a great, solid set of books that has everything Players will need (Except Dice) to get going at the game table. That they've been offered together for the price of one is phenominal. That Amazon has further discounted that price is amazing as well, and I am strongly considering getting it just to have extra copies of them at the table.

DnD Insider code,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 4th Edition Player's Handbook Collection: 4th Edition D&D Core Rulebooks (Hardcover)
the DnD insider code that takes $12 off your purchase of a 12 month subscription. OFFER IS NOT VALID AFTER 11:59PM (PST) ON JUNE 30th, 2010. keep this in mind when ordering. Other than that the Player's Handbook and Player's Handbook 2 is all you need to know to play in DnD. Where a DM can get by without owning a Monster Manual, the PHB is a must have. 5 stars!

Normally these 2 books cost $30 each! So if you're interested in Dnd and the one thing thats restricting you from playing or getting into it is the prices, welcome to your solution. I bought this and am now set and ready to play.

This review is copied and pasted across all of the 4th edition products I purchased as it relates to the system as a whole. The individual books are all decently made, and have reasonable (though far from perfect) editing.
For those who grew up playing Dungeons & Dragons (as I did) this 4th edition of the game is not what we are used to. This does not mean it is a poor game, by any means. It does, however, mean that what you are buying is a "modern" interpretation of the classic game. It feels much more like a video game than a pen and paper role playing game. In the end, this is not a bad product line, but it is a better one for younger gamers than for those of us who are older and who were heavily exposed to earlier editions.

Get DDI Instead,
This review is from: 4th Edition Player's Handbook Collection: 4th Edition D&D Core Rulebooks (Hardcover)
After going through the books, I felt it is better to just go with D&D Interactive on WOTC's website. Everything is current there. The errata for all the published books would be book in itself. I like physical books as much as the next person but for this system, just subscribe to DDI.

This package is beautiful, even if now seriously-outdated (in terms of the Dungeons & Dragons Insider subscription discount coupon being expired). How can any DnD 4e player not be interested in PG 1 and PG 2 for $15 each, shipped?
Great product and fast shipping from the third-party vendor. I definitely recommend this package for as long as it's still around and being sold in "brand new" packaging!

The books showed up in timely fashion in near perfect condition still in shrink wrap. The price was a good deal and the books are an invaluable source of information for 4E DnD.

2 books for less than the price of one? Why haven't you bought this yet? It's a no brainer. Plus, these are the only two player's handbooks you should be using. Player's Handbook 3, adds crappy filler classes and races that take away from the tactical realism of the game. So for the only two Player's Handbooks you should be using, you can't beat this price. BUY IT! :D

Our group uses this set all the time, they have the basic ground information needed for the players to help answer most any question about what they can do and how their things work, along with all the useful information needed for leveling up time.

This is a great way to start yourself playing 4e D&D. It has everything you need to start playing your character and it is bundled together to give you savings.
