Biography

What’s the 4th Street Feeling?
“4th Street is in Leavenworth,” says Melissa Etheridge.
That’s her home town in Kansas, pop. 25,000, known mostly for its prison and Army base.
And it’s the place evoked in the title, and title song, of 4th Street Feeling, the 12th studio album of her singular, 25-year recording career.
“It’s kind of the main ... Read more in Amazon's Melissa Etheridge Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Etheridge Returns at the Top of Her Game September 4, 2012
Format:Audio CD
The sound that pervades "4th Street Feeling," Melissa Etheridge's stark, strutting, sometimes bluesy homage to her Americana roots, is one of simple assuredness - the kind that comes when an artist is more interested in expression and craft than commercial viability.

What logically accompanies are touches of blatant overtness and occasional broad strokes, since precious few are stationed at the editing board - as a matter of fact, the LP marks the first time Etheridge plays every guitar part - but her unbridled passion, long her unspoken calling card, carries the melodic and emotional weight, anchoring one of her finest sets of tunes.

"The Shadow of a Black Crow" and "A Disaster," are among the darkest songs she has ever committed to disc, informed by the unfortunate circumstances of her personal life in recent years. She wrings out her soul, coaxing heartrending, stirring melodies and incisive, picturesque lyrics that instantly impress and characterize the album.

Even the groovy, earthy "Be Real," which at first reads like Etheridge's advice to misguided young Hollywoodites and their worshippers, broods and simmers with a venomous bite. Still, for all her anxiety and pain, Etheridge never hits below the belt or spells things out too clearly, with the only exception the righteous, rocking "Sympathy."

Not all is dour, of course. Etheridge has long proven herself a rarity - an introspective singer/songwriter who can express even her joy and triumph with surprising originality - and she lives up to that here with the lilting, positively romantic "I Can Wait" and the coyly sensuous "Rock and Roll Me." Even "Falling Up," which shares its title and spirituality with Rickie Lee Jones' 2007 single, is its own heartening call to draw the curtains firmly open.

Etheridge is in fine form on "4th Street Feeling." Her longtime listeners know what to expect of her, and much of that is here to be appreciated and savored.

5.0 out of 5 stars "She's Back Where She Belongs!" September 6, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Melissa Etheridge has released her latest album, "4th Street Feeling", and I must say it is her best recording in years especially after a series of CD's failed to peak my interest. Perhaps it was simply the songs on those albums I didn't care for or the production, but in this, her 12th studio album, Melissa is back at the top of her game.

She has said she wanted to celebrate her 51 years of living and of "going around the sun 51 times". As mosy know Melissa has had her share of heartache in recent years...her battle with cancer and a terrible breakup with a former lover that left her scarred. Perhaps it was the later that inspired her to write 12 of the best songs of her career as they are insightful, autobiographical and thought-provoking and as any serious songwriter will tell you the best songs they can compise are from reliving real-life experiences.

Melissa says her influences on "4th Street Feeling" are from country to rock to R&B to folk and soul. Says Etheride, "I grew up with one radio station-one AM station that would play Tammy Wynette, then Marvin Gay then Led Zepplin. So I never thought there being a difference between these genres".

My favorite cuts on this remarkable release include "A Disaster" where Missy talks about saying goodbye to the enemy, "Be Real" where she sings about selling her soul to fame and "Symathy" starts off with the line, "There's a liar in your bed", in reference to her former lover.

I predict that come February when the Grammy nominations are announced Melissa Etheridge will indeed receive multiple noms. Melissa...welcome back and I must say you are in top form both as a singer and most impressively as a songwriter. WOW!!!

A+++

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Vintage Etheridge September 5, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The other two reviewers are right on target. This is a fabulous, unbelievably wonderful Melissa Etheridge-at-her-best album. I listened to the samples while searching through Amazon's offerings. After the first snippet I knew I was paying full price for the album. After the second sample I knew I was paying full price for the deluxe version. I purchased the album and have just finished listening to it, stem to stern. I have purchased literally a couple hundred albums in the past year. This is already my favorite. I have now put it on loop. You will not be disappointed.
