I was introduced to these shirts about three years ago by a friend. His rave comments got me to buy one at $55, and I've never regretted it. That original one finally wore out, but since then I've purchased five more and each has been as good or better than the first. The vented back provides great cooling in summer, especially if life and the boss like to make you wear long sleeves. On off time I wear the denims, which thus far have proven the most durable of the bunch.

With this shirt I can carry cellphone, iPod, pager and wallet of papers without appearing bulky or stabbing my wife and kids when giving or getting hug. With shopping around, you can now get these at much better prices than I initially paid (eg, here at Amazon), and can often come up with some of the rarer sizes like LT (my favorite for long sleeve) and XLT. Be aware they cut the waist and gut pretty generous, so if you're at all in shape the 'tall' versions may be what you want. For the record, I'm 6'0"/200 lbs, and the LT long sleeve is perfect for me.

Since being introduced to these, I've turned on about a half-dozen equally sturdy guys onto them. When we get together, we look like a platoon or a bowling team, but hey - we're all comfortable. And well-stocked. Recommended.

5.11 shirts are by far the most superior product on the market for the tactical professional. Plenty of cargo space and unique touches make these shirts a must have. They stand up to rugged terrain and hostile situations. You will not find a more durable line of clothing. HIGHLY Recommended!

This shirt is great! I absolutely love this shirt. Besides fitting me perfectly and comfortably (in available extended sizes), I have it in an ideal earth-tone colour too that just blends in. The shirt has a crisp appearance even with minimal maintenance (mostly wash and hang), and an outstanding durability which at least equals military issue uniforms. The thick ripstop fabric similar to ACUs or the old BDUs wears like iron and can even serve as a outerwear coat in some climates. It's a notch or two above a normal civilian shirt.

The shirt has two pleated chest pockets with flaps (one with a pass through for pens), 2 "hidden" map/document pockets also big enough for a small holdout (secured by Velcro), and an additional 2 pen/penlight slot pocket on the left upper sleeve. The long-sleeves with adjustable button cuffs can be rolled up and secured with a buttoning loop. The collar has hidden button down stays. The back has a hidden mesh panel and ventilation flaps. The fine detailing on this high quality shirt is impressive, like double stitched seams, matching colour buttons, button spares, hang up loop, reinforcements, and even optional sew-on epaulets and badge tab are provided (so it literally can be used as uniform wear).

Because this shirt has a clean classic line and neat appearance it is very versatile. I use it for comfortable travel wear(with a vest), casual dress (with tie, slacks and jacket), tactical/outdoor wear (with body armour and operator pants), and cold weather use (as a mid layer). The cotton and back vent just feels comfortable. Long-sleeve shirts are more protective (from the elements, solar radiation, fire, dust/grit, insects, even abrasions and cuts) and remember, a long-sleeve can roll up and become a short-sleeve shirt, but not vice versa.

I used to love 5.11 shirts...

PRO:

the pockets are great...

CONS:

heinously expensive

and THEY DON'T FIT!!! The brand caters to law enforcement and their shirts are cut for barrel-chested types wearing body armor. I used to be able to cope with the weird cut by getting the more expensive "medium-tall" versions of the shirts, but those are now discontinued. Now the sleeves on medium shirts are too short and the sleeves on large shirts fit me, but the body of the shirt either requires me to become fat or wear body armor underneath...maybe both.

MY SHIRT-SHOPPING JOURNEY:

personally, I like big velcro-closure pockets so I don't have to mess around with buttons and the pocket contents don't spill when I bend over... I discovered this when I bought a few cotton long sleeve shirts from REI, and I was terribly disappointed when I wore them out completely and found that REI no longer bothered with cotton shirts...all synthetic stuff, that keeps you cool or dries out quickly if you're drenched while hiking in a rainstorm. Besides missing the comfort of cotton, I found that Velcro and lighter polyester blends like coolmax aren't such a good match: as the velcro starts to wear out, the hooks come undone in the laundry and start hooking and pulling at the shirt fabric, so go with heavier fabric blends and/or pay careful attention to the design in case you need to replace the worn-out velcro. It's a pity that replacing velcro isn't as simple as sewing a button back on. Also, brands like Columbia and other safari-style clothing makers tend to make a fetish of many little pockets (like for your compass) rather than big versatile pockets that can hold cellphones and wallets or passports comfortably...
