I bought my first pair of these boots about 3 years ago. I pulled them on by putting my index finger in the loop for pulling them on at the back of the heel. The fabric that the loops were stitched to started to tear after a few months. I thought this was unreasonable so I contacted 5.11.

The boots were replaced under warranty. I purchased a boot shoe horn and rarely use the pull on loops at the top of the heels. I wore the second pair frequently in fall and winter. I live in Wisconsin and live a pretty sedentary life style. No long walks or hiking etc. The boots failed after 2 years. The plastic molded band that extends from the sole up to cover the toe area split and detached from the sole. The material was not cut or damaged. It seemed to have aged and to have become brittle. It crumbled in my fingers when I bent it. Both feet were the same. The failure occurred on the inner side beside my foot ball. At the time of the failure the sole treads showed minimal wear with tread blocks still present in the foot ball area where the most wear occurs. If they were tires they would be described as "50% life left".

I could have complained again to 5.11 but I never bothered and ordered another pair on Amazon for 20% less than I paid previously. I purchased the exact replacement because I have wide feet and it is not easy to find boots that fit well and are comfortable. The 5.11 in 13 2E is comfortable on my all day.

The boots are made mostly from synthetic materials and therefor require no cleaning or maintenance. Any dirt that attached to them just fell off when dry. They looked presentable during their two years of service.

I would not unreservedly recommend these boots to a friend.

All I can say is that after nearly 15 years in LE, this is the most comfortable boot I have put my feet in. Would recommend them to anyone. I also recently purchased the 5.11 Haste 6" boot with is this same boot in black. I love them!

Very well made, and also good looking boots. They need some breaking in so I highly recommend thick socks for the fist 1/2 dozen times you were them. I got blisters in the upper heel area where there was some rather stiff leather. You probably want to order these 1/2 size larger than you would with casual shoes because of the need for thicker socks and a litte breathing room.

Second issue are the laces which are just ridiculously short. I can barely tie teeny weeny bows with them.

Right out of the box - I knew these would be great. My pair was sized about 1/4 size small - so I had no problem going up 1/2 size to 9.5 D (M). These were purchased for use on a specific military training site (Fort Hunter-Liggett, CA) where I'm assigned for the summer as a computer support contractor.

These work great for long hours of instruction on a concrete floor as well as access to unimproved training sites. I'm a 27 year army veteran/retiree with flat feet (contracting for 13 years now also) and tend to pronate while walking - these work well for me without foot pads or other orthodics. Went through mud, dust, heat, rain and cool nights without foot discomfort. My feet remain dry in amost all conditions (these are not waterproof as they have vent holes near the center side arch support) from the inside as these boots breathe and ventilate well.

The zippered sides gets me some razzing from fellow vet contractors - but sliding into them in early morning getaways to the worksite is appreciated (I understand 5.11 will come out with similar zipperless models in August 2011).

Mud is always a problem no matter what you wear - and indeed these slide around as the boot sole lugs fill up as all boots do and are not as high as combat boots so be careful how deep you step into mud. The padded upper ankle support needs to be lace adjusted as not to be too tight (or loose) and after less than one days wear these were broke in and I love them. My favorites however are still my black Danner Fort Lewis 'go-devil' boots purchased over 20 years ago with plastic heel cups and goretex lining (one pair also insulated) - (almost wore out both pair) but these aren't needed in a computer or headquarters environment where I work).

This seller has double their price on this boot, I had it saved in my wish list not sure what price but under $100.00 and the shipping is ridiculous high price, the MSRP on this boot is 129.00 and you can find it online for under $100.00 shipping $8 to $10 just a heads up do not trust when someone jacks up the price more then its worth!! They are selling this boot for $171.56 and shipping $30.77, 5-4-14 so if the price goes down beware of this seller!!

This is a very comfortable boot and like the zipper access. I owned a pair of 8in 511 boots and wore them in Iraq and they were extremely comfortable, therefore I tried the 6 in version and they are just as comfortable. They seem to hold up well also. No problems and would recommend to anyone.

I found the ankle support to be immediately uncomfortable and restrictive so I stopped lacing them all the way up. The side zipper is nice for quick on/offs but adds bulkiness to the inside of the boot. The sole is not particularly comfortable or cushiony. After a few hours I'm ready to take these boots off and give my knees and feet a break. I might try adding inserts. The laces do stay tied which is good, I'm surprised by how many shoe and boot laces don't and require you to double tie them. They are billed as summer boots but they are pretty thick and stiff. I really wanted to love these but find myself choosing my old sneakers more often than not than these simply for comfort.
