I brought 5 pairs of these to Iraq where I work as a contractor. They are comfortable and stand up to the KBR laundry well. They have a cell phone/radio/flashlight pocket, and pockets on the legs. The leg pockets are good for taking food out of the DFAC. There's a metal ring for your keys or ID badge. There's a strap on the hip where you can hang your kevlar if you need to. The back pockets seal with velcro so nothing will fall out. These are really good pants for hostile environments. Get the khaki color because it hides the dust well. The 5.11 polos are good too.

I started wearing 5.11 stuff in Afghanistan as they made the only cargo pants available to me. At first I balked at the price for a pair of pants, but since I didn't have any other options I bought a pair. Well, long story short, it's several years later and with 1 exception, I haven't bought another type of cargos since then. More on the exception later.

Why I go out of my way to buy these things:

1.) Build Quality: Just like other 5.11 products I've bought, the build quality is superior. I'm sure you can read all the details about how they make these pants, but the end effect is this: cargo pants that are about as durable as jeans or more-so. I have gotten a year of hard wear out of one pair of these pants.

2.) Design: With most 5.11 products I continue to find I have overlooked useful features and then discover them long after purchase. From the roomy, slanted back pockets, to the reinforced knife-clip pocket seam, to the D-ring - I really do use most everything they've designed into these pants. But every once in a while there's still the lightbulb-on "Oh! THAT's what that is for!" moment. My favourite feature, though, is the cell phone pocket.

One one occasion I walked into a uniform store and they did not have 5.11s in my size in stock. As I was leaving the country the next day, they talked me into buying a knockoff pair for a similar price by a company I'd never heard of. In any event, though the features of the 5.11 pants were copied, the build quality wasn't, and I was disappointed. I still use em, but they're already showing more wear than 5.11s I bought 6 months earlier and wear more. So yeah, I'm sticking with the 5.11 brand.

I'm actually a female security officer. I originally bought the Men's pants because I could not get them in Women's sizes where I first found them. I instantly fell in love with them--so much that I never even sought out the Women's sizes. The fit is very comfortable, and the pockets are a must for work--this way I can stash my cell phone, car keys, wallet, and notebook without having to put anything in the breast pockets of my uniform shirts. They allow for a great deal of mobility and adapt well for just about any situation. They are heavy enough to help shut out the cold, too (I was wearing them when I had to shovel out an 18-wheeler that got stuck in the snow at my post!!), but they are usually pretty comfortable in warmer conditions, too. This is my fourth or fifth pair and I absolutely love them. I have recommended them to all my friends in Law Enforcement and Security; they are well worth the money--you will not be disappointed. [Just a tip, though, they usually do take a couple of washes to "break in."]

I love these pants. But one thing I think the sellers need to do is make it clear which of the configurations the customer is looking at. This particular model here has the least number of pockets. It's basically cargo pants with one extra little pocket on the left with a Velcro flap. I much prefer the model that has an eighth pocket (model 74273) - a small pocket on the right side under the belt and keying, which I use for keys, pens and loose coins. Without it, I have to dig to the bottom of the big side slash pocket for these little things. IMO its much more convenient to have this eighth pocket. And then there is a variant with two zip up pockets on each side, each having two sub pockets (model 74290). Also the lower cargo pockets are zippered to, and each has two sub pockets. This variant was my favorite, since it in effect has fourteen pockets in all. But as I note in my update, I have been finding my hand sometimes gets cut on the zipper when I dig into the pocket. Also, one of the zippers on a lower pocket broke, I wish the manufacturer made it clear which variant is which. Look closely at the photos and hopefully they are showing the correct photo.

Another thing is the length. Of the six pairs of these pants I own (yes I do love them aside from my gripes) (tan, khaki, olive, tundra, blue and black). The tundra's are cut much longer than the other pairs (close to two inches longer) and I had to fold up the cuff. I will have these formally altered, because returning them would have been more of a hassle. This was the reason for the one-star deduction. If they would add the internal sub-pockets to model 74273, they would have the ultimate tactical cargo pants.

I wear these every day as business casual to work, or out on weekends. Hiking and camping, etc.
