Editorial Reviews

Ol' Blue Eyes' career went through a revival in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Many of the song for which he was best known came out of this period. Now you can own 5 complete albums on 5 CDs in one handy set. Albums include A Swingin' Affair (1957), Sinatra's Swingin' Session (1961), Come Swing with Me (1961), Swing Along with Me (1961) and Sinatra & Swingin' Brass (1962).

A very no frills package. If you are interested in some of Frank's late Capitol / early Reprise recordings, this is a good collection to have. The sound is good. The packaging is just the CD in a slipcase reproduction of the record album. The five CDs are in a simple slip box. The two with Billy May arranging and orchestra are a notch above the others. Five Sinatra albums under $20 are a steal, baby!

You get:
A Swingin Affair 1957 Capitol
Sinatra's Swingin' Session!!! 1961 Capitol
Come Swing with Me! 1961Capitol Billy May
Swing Along With Me 1961 Reprise Billy May
Sinatra and Swingin' Brass 1962 Repise

Are you kidding? Five of Sinatra's classic albums from the absolute prime of his career for 4 dollars a pop? What's not to like?

As someone who has been collecting Sinatra albums for years, one thing I like about getting these complete albums is the fact that a number of these songs are not included on his gazillion "greatest hits" and "best of" collections that are floating around out there. You may find yourself enjoying a number of selections from these albums that aren't familiar to you for that very reason, just as I have.

Also, it is a chance to hear these songs in the order that the "Chairman of the Board" intended you to hear them. As has been said many times before, in the '50's and '60's, Sinatra was a big fan of the "concept" album, wherein all the selections on an album had a special connection and sequence.

If you are a serious Sinatra fan you probably already own these albums in some form or another. For those of you who are past the "introduction phase" and are looking to delve deeper into all things Sinatra, then I highly recommend this set at 20 bucks. You CANNOT go wrong.

All of these are timeless, indispensable albums by the 20th century's greatest entertainer who, especially with the support of Nelson Riddle's arrangements, raised the American popular song to an unprecedented high level of artistry. It was Sinatra who, more than any other single individual, virtually "created" that body of material known as "The Great American Songbook" (which would form the basis for the greater part of the repertory of jazz musicians in the latter half of the 20th century). Sinatra went back to the "short-running," long-forgotten revues of the 20s and 30s to "rescue" some of the best American popular songs by Berlin, Kern, Arlen, Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart. If we hear these songs and recognize them, you should know who to thank.

But Sinatra and Riddle worked in 3 idioms: swing (and no one has swung harder than Sinatra); ballads (Sinatra slowed down the tempos and converted love songs intended for dancing into profound soliloquy); Broadway (he wasn't known in the '40s as "The Voice" for nothing--and in the 1960s he could still reach the highest balconies with spine-tingling performances of Rodgers and Hammerstein showstoppers).

Each of the 5 albums in this set represents "Sinatra the Swinger," and each is a winner. As a Sinatra-phile, I personally wouldn't settle for less than the original individual albums (on Capitol, before Frank formed his own label, Reprise Records). But a Sinatra fan can always supplement this set with other "swingers" (though I would recommend the ballad and Broadway albums with Riddle just as strongly). The most glaring omission in th present group of 5 albums is the one that has always scored highest with fans and critics: "Sinatra Sings for Swingin' Lovers.

Who can complain about a Sinatra album. Love listening to this set, but my only caveat is to be aware of the fact it's not digitally remastered.

I am perplexed on who decides the albums for these series of 5 Classic Albums by whomever mini box sets . Some are easy as with the Emmy Lou Harris, Dr. John , and Judy Collins box sets ----they are their first 5 albums they made for a particular label. But with Sinatra no such format.....you have 3 albums from his classic Capitol period and 2 early albums from his own Reprise label. The first 2 albums with orchestras backed by Nelson Riddle , the next 2 Billy May and the last Neil Hefti. The albums though short in length ( the exceptions are the Swingin Affair and Swing Along with Me albums ) are solid uptempo sessions cranked out with a spontaniety that belies most studio recordings. Be forwarned if you are looking for the definitife version of The Lady is a Tramp that was on some CD reisuues of A Swingin' Affair is not here . Which is OK because the original LP never had it on to begin with......but was recorded during that session .

This package I would say is for the novice Sinatra fan.......because if you are a fan for some time you have all this music in their seperate albums and or in major box sets.

This was purchased for an assisted living facility and the folks there LOVE it. It arrived quickly and there are so many songs they are never having to listen to the same songs over and over. Excellent bargain with a lot of oldies but goodies!
