Please tell me whey we can't just purchase a Blu-ray "one" disc...I don't mind having a regular DVD plus the Blu-ray but I don't having to purchase the 3D DVD that I'm never going to use...hopefully the basic Blu-ray will be available closer to the time this product is released.
I'm sure closer to release there will be every disc combination possible for sale. Sadly though none of them will include an extended edition of the movie. Thats is, in my opinion the biggest problem, that if a fan bought every release, they'd have 3 theatrical releases, 3 extended editions, and then 1 box set of either edition or both, and possibly in a few years a high frame rate box set edition as well. I just wish they would release both theatrical and extended at the same time. I understand why we can't get the high frame rate, but they could easily offer us the extended edition earlier than November. But since they won't, I buy the 3D theatrical editions, never even remove any other discs, and will wait 2 more years to buy the "complete box set extended edition".... It would be nice if a person didn't have to create a 5 year plan just to buy a movie. So I understand what you're getting at with them not offering to sell what someone wants to buy, or in my case, when they want to buy it. But because Tolkien fans will buy it anyway they can get it, we have to take it how Hollywood wants to give it, which is the most profitable way they can think of.
