More About the Author

Jill Grimes, MD, practices family medicine in Austin, Texas. She is a clinical instructor for UMASS Medical School through an innovative internet-based ethics course for medical students. Dr. Grimes is passionate about all types of preventative medicine- from nutrition to sexually transmitted diseases. She'd much prefer to help her patients lose weight and create healthy life habits than add on more prescriptions to treat their high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, and she practices what she preaches.

Dr. Grimes loves creating and thinking outside the box- whether it's in medicine or in her role as a girl scout leader or mother. She and her daughters have been involved with scouting for seven years (not counting Dr. Grimes' own scouting days as a youth.) Favorite badge work? Anything with a craft or outdoor activity, or a combination such as creating a pressed flower collection during a fun hike. The Grimes family loves to be creative in the kitchen as well, always on the quest for a new fruit smoothie.

Pet peeve? Fast-food medicine! We need to stop popping pills for problems that life style modifications will solve. Medicines are wonderful and necessary, but let's use them as either a temporary or at least second-line solution.

Dr. Grimes wrote Seductive Delusions-how everyday people catch STDs, to try a different approach to STD education. We have plenty of accurate data and educational handouts out there, but real stories impact with far more power. Most people believe STDs lurk in dark corners of our society, but any primary care physician will tell you the population they treat includes successful, educated men and women across the board!

1.0 out of 5 stars Surprise!! Index "off by a few pages", August 26, 2009
This review is from: The 5-Minute Clinical Consult 2010 (Print, Website, and Mobile) (The 5-Minute Consult Series) (Hardcover)
I bought this directly from a sales person at a CME meeting--it would have been nice if he had told me that there was an Erratum inside the cover stating that the index WAS WRONG and cut me a large deal on the book.

No algorithm or 5-Minute entry at all for abdominal pain, acute headache, nephrolithiasis, thyroid nodule or goiter among many other common entities. Unlike Ferri, no specific dosages of migraine meds, just general therapeutics so have another reference handy.

If you want good algorithms for common problems check out "Common Medical Diagnoses: An Algorithmic Approach."
