I purchased my gammon set about 4 months ago, first of all the assembly instructions provided in the box are worthless. I also picked up Tommy Igoe's getting started on drums dvd, which walks you through assembly step by step.

I'm going to go through everything about this drum set piece by piece, because some things are great and some things are terrible.

The drums shells themselves are made of nato wood, which has similar sonic properties to mahogany so you're going to get good lows out of you're bass drum and floor tom but the rack toms could sound much better. The biggest problem i have with this kit are the bass drum spurs: they aren't quite long enough and I've had to set them on top of a bunched up throw blanket to raise the drum up to where it's supposed to be and keep it from sliding forward on me. Also the rack toms only have 5 lugs each, making it more difficult to tune.

I really hate the sound of the snare drum, it's hard to describe but it's most likely due to the choice of nato wood again. I replaced it after about a month with a poplar one that sounds worlds better, at the very least it needs a better head put on it.

If the cymbals are a big selling point for you prepare to be disappointed. At first i thought that since it's just me and my friends jamming in the basement i wouldn't care if they didn't sound very good, but not only do these sound bad, the hi-hats actually hold you back when you start trying to experiment with them. They don't vibrate, they wobble, and it's impossible to learn certain techniques with them because you can't tell if you're doing it right or not if it sounds like crap no matter what. Also, the bottom hi-hat started to buckle around the hole after only a few days of playing normally. If you can stand them, great, but if not you're going to find yourself spending around [...] on one of the starter packs from meinl, zildjian, or sabian...

The hardware that comes with it is double braced and sturdy. The cymbal stand doesn't have a plastic sleeve, but instead has two small metal sleeves that may cause harm to your cymbals and the threads on it are a nonstandard size so you won't be able to screw anything onto it other than the wingnut that comes with it. The Hi-hat stand is nice, you can rotate the legs around for a double pedal to fit if you get creative and remove a screw, the spring is already feeling like it's losing its bounce though. I have absolutely no complaints about the snare stand, it does the job perfectly with no issues.

If you weigh over 150 lbs be prepared to buy a new drum throne too, I weigh 180 and the legs bent up under my weight and the vertical post had to be bent back into shape daily until the whole thing came apart altogether.

Looking back I most likely would have been better off buying a shell pack for the same price and getting the hardware separately. I would have paid roughly the same price and would have ended up with a nicer kit. Sure, it's an all inclusive pack, but I ended up having to replace almost all of it... Look at this as a shell pack rather than as a whole kit when comparing prices, and make you're decision with that in mind.

Very impressed with the drum set. It comes disassembled, but has a very informative website that helps with setting it up. It looks stunning and has a gloss finish that gives it a nice touch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic deal, August 4, 2010

To start out, don't listen to these snobs, this drum set sounds great, and the contents and price make it a great bargain. This set does come with everything you need to start playing. It even includes a tool/key to tighten the tension rods (I didn't realize it was there until I was all finished). The snare comes put together, and the snares are made of steel. All and all if you tune the drums right, it will sound great. This is a full size drum set, but it come disassembled and enclosed in two medium sized boxes, so don't freak out when you receive the boxes, thinking you mistaken it for a junior size.

Now for the people snubbing this product, keep in mind that your getting a standard drum set, not just 5 drums. And if you dont like the sound of the drums, then re-tune it. If you don't like the sounds of the cymbals, then go a buy the cymbals you desire. To me the cymbals sound great, and overall the set is great.

The only bad thing about this set is the stool, its not that well made, in fact it bent on me after about 10 minutes of playing. Myself I just took chair out of the kitchen, and it work well for me.

So in conclusion, for the price it is well worth it. And the $60 shipping, That is so you can receive the drum set within 3 to 7 days. I ordered mine on Wednesday night, and it came at 12pm Tuesday.

4.0 out of 5 stars What makes this drum set for beginners?, August 4, 2010

This review is from: New Drum Set Black 5-Piece Complete Full Size with Cymbals Stands Stool Sticks
What makes this drum set for beginners?
(ie.What makes this drum set around $300 instead of $3,000?)

I was wondering about that very question before I purchased this set. Well, the drum heads are made of some thinner looking plastic material (not the regular mylar plastic for the professional drums?).

That sort of disappointed me because I wanted to practice on drums closer to the more expensive ones we have at school.

The cymbals sound more like tin cans than the nice vibrating crashing sound we get from the cymbals at school, but you can buy new cymbals and exchange the ones this comes with. (I wonder if I can also buy the better drum heads in the future and replace the ones this comes with)

The bass drum vibrates (again different from the more professional bass drum at school).

Anyway, that's what makes this more for beginners, it uses cheaper material than the professional one. But if you are a beginner, it's a good buy for the price. (Or you can buy an electric drum set like the Ion which you can also use for Rock Band. That one's got everything as well and you can lower the volume so neighbors don't hear you.)

Update: I'm really glad we purchased this drum set. I have been playing every day (2-3 hours per day) and it's awesome. The sound of the cymbals still bother me a little, I know I like to replace them with the nicer ones Zildjian 14-Inch ZBT Rock Hi-Hats Cymbal Pair like the ones we play at school.

The bass drum stopped vibrating and it's terrific. We're using Vic Firth Cymbal Pack w/ 10, 12, 14(2), 22, Hi-hat and Cymbals to keep the sound down and that's working well for us. Everything works, it's helping me practice, awesome for the price!

Update to my Update: It's Feb. 27, 2011, about 7 mo's since I got this drum set and I love it even more now. I have replaced the hi hats and ride/crash cymbals with a Zildjian 22" and a Sabian 14". And when my drum teacher came by the other day and played it, he gave it 2 thumbs up.

I mean, that's my drum teacher. He just said, "put a pillow inside the bass drum otherwise it's all good." He added that the hardware (screws, nuts, bolts) aren't as high quality as the more professional ones but if I'm not hauling it to gigs anyway, if it's just going to stay in one place then it's perfectly fine.

So, there you go, it's drum-teacher-approved, replacing the drum heads is unnecessary, good luck to all you drummers out there--drumming on this set is FUN!!!

p.s. My drum teacher did suggest I get a second Ride Cymbal (like an 18" since different size cymbals produce different sounds)

5.0 out of 5 stars Read carefully, August 29, 2011

This review is from: New Drum Set Black 5-Piece Complete Full Size with Cymbals Stands Stool Sticks
I have read the reviews for this set (some good, some horrible) but as a musician and a fellow drummer, i'm here to spill the facts. First of all, if you are looking at this product than you're either starting out, or you have a tight budget at the moment (my case). Let's begin with the drums themselves, not the hardware. The total price of this set is around $190 (plus shipping). That is still an amazing deal just for the shells and heads. No they are not maple or mahogany or whatever wood you think is the best, but it is sturdy and gets the job done. That said, be happy that there are full size drum shells for this price.

Now for the hardware. Yes, it is light weight and "cheap", but who can say no to free stuff. These peices will do untill you feel confident that you want to expand and upgrade your hardware. If you decide to embark on the journey of professional drumming, then you should upgrade your hardware and drum heads.

Overall this is an amazing price for starting out fresh with endless possibilities to expand. Be happy if you purchase this, because you will never find a better deal for this. Plus, my hardware is still perfect, but the cymbals are for practice only (dont expect Zildjian, just something to train with till the time is right. Overall
amazing deal. Build your own music legacy :).
Happy drumming!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great beginner set, December 14, 2010

This review is from: New Drum Set Black 5-Piece Complete Full Size with Cymbals Stands Stool Sticks
Bought this set to start playing with some friends of mine.
Ordered it on a friday and got it monday night, great shipping time. I had no tracking number though which sucked.
Two medium/big boxes, with all parts disassembled except the snare.
Came with a dvd to detail putting the set together. The drum heads look sketchy out of the box but once installed they play fine.
The set itself sounds great, but your going to have to tune the heads to fit your needs. Only gripe is that the hi-hat and crash don't sound extraordinary.

Overall, great for beginning especially. Putting it together yourself helps get some familiarity with a set if you're a starter. Just remember, you're paying a starter set price, don't expect Neil Pearts set in a box.
Most of all, play and have fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is great and only has 2 minor flaws..., August 17, 2010

I got this in march 2010 and it has been great! I could only see a couple things that people could possibly be conserned about.

1. The Hi-hat pedal doesn't rotate and stays stationary. I don't have a problem with it but for some people it could possibly interfere with their setup and create awkward positioning. Like I said, I don't have a problem with it but in the long run it's definitely worth it for the price. 2. The only other problem is that it is designed for right-handed people. I myself am a Lefty but it works fine, it's just that the labels on the toms are facing you/floor. This could actually be a pro and not a con b/c it allows you to put your own stuff on the outside.

I recommend this product greatly (especially for 1st time drummers). The price is wonderful i mean you could sell it for more money if you really wanted to. I have looked around and it seems like a cheap lil' drum set but it's good quality. the only thing is that the cymbal a ride and i had to get a 2nd one so I could have a crash. The setup is normal, if you are a first time drummer, you may want to get someone to help you with the tuning. Overall it's definitely a perfect drum set for it's price. Hope this was helpful!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Set of Drums, May 8, 2010

This review is from: New Drum Set Black 5-Piece Complete Full Size with Cymbals Stands Stool Sticks
I'm only just starting out as a drummer. So I bought these for practice. They are very good looking drums and quite sturdy and well-made for the price. Although, having said that I'm not sure if they are sturdy enough to be used as performance drums. There do have some weaknesses. They are sturdy enough for "sane" use, but if someone plans on abusing them I don't think they would take too much punishment.

Overall though, I am very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the hardware and the drums themselves. They are much better than I had expected for the price.

I tuned them to their shells. In other words, I took the empty shells, hung them free, and used the kick drum beater to rap on them and recorded the "tones" they made. Then I placed the drum heads on and tuned those to the same pitch. This was a procedure that I learned from a drum manufacturer. This method of tuning worked very well with these drums and I am very well pleased with their sound, timber and pitch.

For someone just starting out on the drums, these drums are great!

By the way, they sound great, and they aren't that flimsy. So they can be used as performance drums. They just aren't going to stand up to neglect and abuse. If they are treated as a musical instrument they should be just fine.
