Rock? Pop? Alternative? Do you need a label?, May 17, 1999

This review is from: 5 Way Switch (Audio CD)
An edgy guitar sound, with vocals that range from rock to folk, hitting soul somewhere along the way. "All The Same" opens with the tradmark hooks that make you crave this album -- just plain catchy. "Fortunate", "Bourbon", and "Early November" scream college radio with rhythm you feel more than hear and lyrics that have meaning beyond the tones that carry them. "Come Undone" and "Bleed On" have an appeal that transcends alternative rock -- a little more emotionally intense and lyrically intimate. "Purple" is a great straight-ahead rock song with wailing guitars and soaring vocals, while tunes like "Chili Red" and "Blue Nubb" show the group's versatility and creativity, experimenting with different sounds while holding fast to their roots. "Odd Man", rages ahead at a breakneck pace reminiscent of early '90s hard rock, while "Break the Ease" and "In the Middle" have a more deliberate tempo with a focus on lyrics and leads. This whole album, without stereotyping, is a pop masterpiece at the rock end of the spectrum. Musically, the sound is complex, yet catchy -- edgy and hard, yet heartfelt -- a truly solid effort from a continually improving group of musicians.
You might like Fat Amy if you like some combination of the following: (early) Smashing Pumpkins, Fleetwood Mac, Pearl Jam
