Unfortunately, the textbook that I use in my high school English classes does not offer an interesting, age apporpriate selection of nonfiction pieces. I purchased this book to help compensate for the lack of interesting essays in our textbook and was delighted to find that this anthology is organized with teachers in mind. Essays are organized by themes, a list of essays to compare/contrast is provided for convenience, and critical thinking and essay questions are provided at the end of each essay.

My daughter brought this home for some required reading in her 9th grade Honors English class and I picked it up ... and couldn't put it down. Finally I bought my own copy, which I have read cover to cover twice, and recently bought another as a gift. What a remarkable selection of remarkable essays, from the classic to the contemporary, what a compendium of thoughts and ideas. A wonderful read, all the way through --particularly if you're not in high school English anymore.

i was pleasently surprised. i really didnt see any worn out pages or markings other than the name written by the previous owner, looks brand new.

I used this book for my English 101 class. I thought it would be dry and boring but it was better than I thought. Some of the articles are very interesting, funny, and thought provoking.

Although I bought it for school it has alot of very interesting and mind opening essays. Overall its a great book and I enjoyed reading it.

I bought this book for my son for school. They are reading it for English in the 11th grade. He is enjoying it and I will certainly read it when he is done. As books go it is rather an expensive book for school reading, but Amazon had the best price and I had to buy some other books too, so we received free shipping. As always, Amazon did not let us down.

This book is commonly used as an english writing class text. It is very liberally biased and does not offer any balance. I would not recommend its use as a text with out using something that provides more contrast.
