5.0 out of 5 stars Bread & Butter Country Licks - Worth the money
I've been playing for many years and consider myself a solid intermediate or even advanced player, but none of these licks are overly difficult. These are a great place to enhance your ability with a lot of the basics. As a comparison, I've also have Brent Mason's dvd, but you need additional fingers to play his stuff! These 50 licks are more for the average player...

DVD Play actions are very kludgy. The menu doesn't work as you would think. Hitting "rewind" always brings you back to the main menu, not the beginning of the clip. It seems that the DVD was built to be one long clip without distinct chapters. Its very difficult to find a certain spot in a lick... The tabs are not accurate on a number of the licks. you can figure them...

These are a great place to enhance your ability with a lot of the basics. As a comparison, I've also have Brent Mason's dvd, but you need additional fingers to play his stuff! These 50 licks are more for the average player looking to improve, not the already hot guitarist looking for some really hot licks.

Well worth the $15 or less. Make sure you get the "booklet" if you buy used, the tab is only printed not in the video.

I am a long time blues and rock player that wants to learn country. I saw this DVD in my local music store for $15 and never having heard of Troy, thought I'd take a chance. Of all the books and videos that I have bought over the years, this is among the very best. The licks are great, the audio, video, and camera work is excellent, and the presentation by the Troy is just great. The level of difficulty is definitely in the low to mid intermediate range but the licks are absolutely top notch. Whether you are a gifted picker or a newbie, there is a lot of great material here. Hats off the Troy Dexter for an excellent instructional video. Highly recommended.

This is an extremely powerful lesson. If only to see how tasty major blues can be, this is worth every penny. But, honestly, the licks are so good and there are so many of them that it goes past the major blues - goes into pedal-steel type overbending, minor blues, gospel feel... this is a phrasebook that can be used immediately.

It's not easy, though, so I would rate it as intermediate. There's a lot of precise bending involved, as well as fret hand pinkie work and some faster alternate picking. These licks have to be performed smoothly to work. But holy moly, they sure are sweet. If you're a rocker, think of the opening of Led Zeppelin's "Hot Dog", then clean it up (get rid of the flubs) and multiply by 50. Whee!

4.0 out of 5 stars Way Fun, December 2, 2009

Dude, this DVD is a blast, and the bluescreen special effects they place behind Troy make you feel like you're on an actual front porch in Missouri, just picking away while granddad whittles a portrait of a squirrel out of a chunk of wood. And the dazzling digital segues will have you thinking you chugged too much moonshine. I have played guitar for about 14 years, mainly unsophisticated garage rock, but have always been interested in learning more country licks. This DVD delivers, but be warned, as others have already stated, it's not for beginners. Hell, even I have to watch Troy run though a lick about 10 times before I have it down-pat. Luckily there's a tab sheet included. I didn't bother reading along with it until about Lick #5, but it really helps speed things along. The cool pedal steel-emulatng bends and non-blues scale riffs the DVD teaches will help any bottomed-out guitar player learn a few new tricks and give you a new lease on shred. What are you gonna do? Play "Satisfaction" your whole life? Buy this and give your fingers a musical dip of Skoal.

It seems that the DVD was built to be one long clip without distinct chapters. Its very difficult to find a certain spot in a lick... The tabs are not accurate on a number of the licks. you can figure them out by then but hey, get them right. The licks themselves are pretty good and Troy is a good player. But he doesn't spend as much time on the structure as I would like. You really have to watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars beyond beginer, April 18, 2011

Good and useful licks and not a lot of wasted time with fluff. He gets right in to it. Licks are at least intermediate skill and beyond. The production is jerky and at first I thought the DVD was malfunctioning. The chapters end and begin abruptly. I think the producer just chopped a continuous sequence into chapters. But who cares? We just wanna see the licks! Right?
