Book Description

August 2000
Colon cancer kills. However, 95 percent of all colon cancers can be halted when caught early enough. Moreover, colon cancer can be prevented entirely through a high fiber, low-fat diet.

50 Ways To Prevent Colon Cancer gives a detailed look at how the colon functions and how dietary factors and stress can cause it to malfunction. Additionally, the book explains how excess fat affects the colon, and what foods and fibers should be eaten for optimal colon health. Routine diagnostic examinations and treatment options are also discussed, along with ways to control environmental risk.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The recent media spotlight on celebrities with colon cancer (e.g., Darryl Strawberry, Barbara Barrie, and Katie Couric) may well reflect concern for the third most common cancer in the America. Perhaps this is why medical writer Rosenthal (The Gastrointestinal Sourcebook) focuses her (11th) popular guide on colorectal cancer prevention. Simple steps for risk reduction are listed in each of the book's five main sections. The author writes clearly and fluidly, yet three basic misconceptions should be noted. First, Rosenthal recommends alternating yearly between sigmoidoscopy and colonscopy exams for those over 45, contrary to all published guidelines (notably, the American Cancer Society's guidelines on colorectal screening, which counsels those at documented risk to test every three to five years). Second, while early diagnosis may arrest disease progression, it certainly is not a preventative measure. Third, while it is sensible to advise folks to eat a well-balanced diet (high fiber and low fat), the current clinical evidence has not proved that such a regimen will provide the desired benefit (New England Journal of Medicine, 1999). There is little new or substantive information here. A better choice is the outstanding American Cancer Society: Colorectal Cancer.DGail Hendler, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Ctr., New York
