More About the Author

"Everywhere Thomson goes, he finds good stories to tell."
New York Times Book Review

Hugh Thomson believes strongly that the world is not as explored as we like to suppose.

He has led several research expeditions to Peru looking for - and finding - Inca ruins, which he has written about in an acclaimed pair of books, 'The White Rock' and 'A Sacred Landscape'.

His most recent book is The Green Road into the Trees: An Exploration of England, in which Hugh for the first time writes about his own country: 'An immensely enjoyable book: curious, articulate, intellectually playful and savagely candid.' The Spectator.

'Tequila Oil' was a memoir about travelling through the badlands of Mexico when he was 18, while his journey to a usually inaccessible part of the Himalayas on the border of Tibet is described in 'Nanda Devi: A Journey to the Last Sanctuary'.

This is one of the most extraordinary books I've ever encountered. Lavishly illustrated and beautifully written by an explorer/documentary filmmaker who has actually been to most, if not all of these incredible man-made places, some multiple times. Seeing these places renews one's faith in the human race and also clearly shows that craftsmanship and a grand vision are an ancient arts. One of the best non-fiction books I've ever seen in a lifetime of book loving and a short career as a Librarian. It originally sold for 50 pounds upon its original 2009 U.K. publication. Five stars are five too few for a book this incredible!

A fascinating coffee table book. I purchased this one as a gift since I already owned one and the recipient has received numerous comments on how nice the book is. A great way to mentally travel to some of the most awesome wonders of the world. Having visited at least six of the locations depicted in the book, I am inspired to see as many more of them in person as possible. This book is a great way to see more of the great wonders of the world through the fantastic photography without leaving the comfort of your home.
