Biography

GEORGE GLENN JONES was born in 1931 in the East Texas town of Saratoga. As a kid he sang for tips on the streets of nearby Beaumont. By age 24, he had been married twice, served in the Marines and was a veteran of the Texas honky-tonk circuit. On a recording session in 1955 for Starday Records, producer Pappy Dailey suggested he quit singing like his idols, Lefty Frizzell, Roy Acuff and Hank ... Read more in Amazon's George Jones Store

The late, great George Jones was one of the greatest singers ever...not "great country singer"...great singer PERIOD. He could express emotion through song as well as the greatest opera baritones of the past century. His recording career began in 1954, and continued until 2011...and during those 60 years, no other male singer came close to matching "The Voice".

And, as this 50 song collection covers a full 50 years, from his earliest recordings to some of his most recent. These songs include some of the best known "hits", as well as some terrific songs that didn't get much radio play. The sound quality is very impressive, with the songs from the 1960's having wonderful sound quality that closely matches today's highest quality recordings.

The other thing this collection does is to make clear that George Jones is one of the rare musicians who got better as he got older. Both his voice and his song writing got stronger and more expressive as he got older.

This collection is a rare bargain. It brings together songs from many prior "greatest hits" albums, as well as some rarely heard songs that are very difficult to find. This is an astounding amount of great music that has been lovingly remastered and made available at a bargain price.

There is only ONE weakness in this collection: George Jones recorded HUNDREDS of great songs...not even a collection of 50 of his best can begin to cover the range and scope of his career. I am looking forward to a future box set with 200 or 300 of his best recordings, remastered at the same superb level as this collection...yes, his career included at LEAST that many great recordings. When singers are eligible to be placed on Mount Rushmore, George Jones will be the first.

He's incapable of it! This 3-disc compilation is a must for any Jones fan. Disc 2 is my favorite - it has many of his Billy Sherrill-era hits on it, and it's sweet to have them back to back on one cd. But the cds with early years hits and later stuff are great too. You cannot quibble with such greatness. George Jones - one of the world's all time best singers.

I am very, very saddened at the news that George Jones passed away this morning; he truly was one of the very best and most talented entertainers ever. I love to listen to his music; there wasn't anything he couldn't make mesmerizing and magical with his excellent voice. He wrote great songs and ballads, too! Moreover, this is an outstanding three CD set of nothing but the best from George Jones; it's all fine music by a truly talented artist. In addition, the sound quality is quite good; I agree with people who say that even the recordings from 50 years ago sound fresh and new. For example, "White Lightning" from 1959 sounds terrific!

Another thing that made George's music so special is that he was able to produce so many fine songs despite his personal problems--perhaps in fact his personal problems made him all the more likely to release tunes with great sensitivity and poignancy.

When George Jones sang, people listened. He could make millions of fans happy with his wonderful baritone voice and there was true sincerity, honesty and passion in his voice when he sang. George performed songs so passionately simply because every one of them took something from his personal life and put it right out there so that everyone could experience his feelings as he performed. His songs could make the airwaves sizzle, too! Another thing that makes these CDs special is that they include songs that didn't always get a lot of airplay although I hope that changes with time and continued sales of CD box sets like this one.

While the musical accompaniments always fit in well with George's vocals, he remains squarely front and center, only sharing the spotlight when he performed with other artists. And when he did perform with others, wow how good they sounded!

The three CDs of 50 years of George Jones' hits is an excellent portrayal of the man and his songs. Each song represents a story in his life through good times and bad. A great set of songs to add to the classic country music collector's library.

While George Jones' 50 Years of Hits is a pretty good retrospective of his career, many of his memorable songs are omitted. Tunes such as "If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me (Her Memory Will)" and "Tennessee Whiskey" are needlessly deleted and should have been part of this compilation. Some more of his tunes with Tammy Wynette, such as "Two Story House" and "Golden Ring" wouldn't have hurt, either. Perhaps a fourth disc should have been added.

George Jones is truly a living legend of country music. He's been through thick and thin for all his life, both in his career and personal life. Countless of hit songs sung by this man seemed to sprinkle all over here and there in the industry, and I found it so hard to collect them all ( Is there anybody on earth who got everything he ever recorded?) Thus, this is a very good chance to, at least, admire his works in a single effort. Every song is a gem. My advice is that you got to have this collection; beg, borrow or steal! (of course, buy it)He's one of very few country singers out there whose new CD could be drawn money from my pocket for a sight unseen and a tune unheard!
