Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The tips here mostly have to do with nail and hair care; there's nothing on beautiful eyes, but there's one chapter on skin care. Barrick-Hickey seems primarily to be addressing white women--although, again, she offers a chapter for "women of color." The format is question-and-answer, ranging from the straightforward "I have static in my hair. What can I do?" (Answer: "Try a spray-on, leave-in conditioner") to the near-technical "Can I use henna in my hair?" (Answer: not on hair that has been chemically treated). Each tip section is introduced by a short essay on the subject, in which we learn, for example, that fingernail polish was invented by the Chinese in 3000 B.C., and that Saxon men died their hair blue, red, green, and orange. A good consumer's guide that would also be useful for the aspiring cosmetologist or beauty products salesperson. John Mort

2.0 out of 5 stars Book lacks in-depth coverage., January 11, 2001

This review is from: 500 Beauty Solutions: Expert Advice on Hair and Nail Care-What to Buy and How to Use It! (Paperback)
I was disappointed with this book, but I wanted to voice my opinion as to why. I didn't want to just say it was stupid like the other reader did. The majority of this book covers nail and hair tips, none of which are anything more than common sense. There's one chapter on skin care, which I did find interesting and informative. The book references white women, so if you're a women of color, you might not find any useful information. Although I'm white, my skin is dark, so I felt that I was at a loss here. The book does dedicate one chapter to women with darker skin, but it really doesn't offer anything useful. What I hated most about this book was it's format. It's written as a question and answer guide. Some people do prefer that type of book, I don't because you don't really get explantions in detail. The book was not a total waste of time, but I wouldn't recommend to someone, unless it was given to you as a gift or you bought it used.

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic beauty info, May 14, 2002

This review is from: 500 Beauty Solutions: Expert Advice on Hair and Nail Care-What to Buy and How to Use It! (Paperback)
Basic beauty that's covered in this book: Shampoo and maintaining your hair, tresses, sprays and gels, brushes and combs and such tools for hair, blow drying and curling irons, curly hair and perms, women of color, coloring hair, nail care, and skin care. So it gives the bare bones basics of beauty and I would reccomend it to pre-teens and teens or adults that need to learn the basics of beauty.

This book is written in a question and answer format and covers basic common sense beauty info. If you want more than common sense basics, then do not buy this book. The other reader was right it doesn't go into much in depth. If you want a beauty book with more depth I would suggest checking out one of bobbi brown's beauty books.
