Editorial Reviews

Review

“Eye-candy and inspiration for all lovers of books and paper!” —Craft Gossip

“Just as inspirational as the first volume that came out a few years ago. Julie Chen was the juror for this one, so you can imagine the quality of the work. Every page is a visual treat.” —Cincinnati Book Arts Society

About the Author

Julie Chen's books are considered exceptional for their craft and quality. Always mindful of the reader who will interact with her structures, she selects paper to delight the eye and appeal to the touch, while creating conceptual forms that function as “vessels” for text, images, ideas, and meaning. In addition to teaching Book Arts at Mills College and operating Flying Fish Press, Chen regularly lectures on bookmaking and teaches workshops nationwide. She lives in Berkeley, CA.

Lovely book...but, I also have the first volume, and I have to say I prefer that one because the books selected are more diverse in style. I'm certainly not sending this book back because it is still an amazing reference book. I just wish there was a little more variety in style, theme, color and content.

I appreciate the changes made from the first volume of 500 Handmade Books but I would take it even further to give more of a description of each book. I would also like more photos of each entry to give a better idea of the complete structure.

It's like a 415 page museum of the most beautiful handmade books you'll probably ever see. But you won't get any help with making your own. The photographs might give you an idea for a structure that would work for something you have in mind. But you won't learn a thing about how to make them. If you know how to make a star-book, a Chinese sewing box, a double concertina, a double tunnel, or a flexagon - you're going to love this. If you were hoping for help with learning those, it's not in this book.

The books were not as original or inspiring as the last 500 Handmade Books Volume. And although I admire the author for wanting to get as many artists represented as possible, it felt crowded.

...as this book will attest to,
but I would have preferred less than 500 books
to have more details on each book.
the softCover edition is indeed wellMade.

Hello! I' m Ilustration's student, so I'd like so much books about art, draw, handmade papers and books etc.
This is an incredible book: the pictures, information about it, binding, printing quality..... All book is a treasure to be in a library!
Is important to my carrear (Ilustration) because I can see some ideas, for example, to my presentation work, kind of paper to be used in a proyect .and different elements to join in a proyect.

I make my own pop-up books. I purchased this book to give me more ideas or to help with the ideas I already have. It is always helpful to get inspiration from others to help in my projects.
