5.0 out of 5 stars Another fabulous cookbook from Dana
I have all of Dana's cookbooks. I like all of them and recommend them without reservation. That said, this one is my favorite (so far). I have been low-carbing for about 4 years now. Dana's books keep me sane and interested in low-carbing. Some of my favorite recipes from this book include: Cheesy Chipotle Soup (p.417). It is great on a blustery day or if you have a...

1.0 out of 5 stars Too many sugar alcohol's and hard-to-find ingredients
While this book has lots of different recipes i have found only a few that I would actually eat or cook for two main reasons. First, almost all of the baking includes sugar alcohol's also known as "polyols". Some claim that by using these sugar substitutes you can deduct carbohydrates from the recipe. It is great on a blustery day or if you have a congested nose. General Pam's Cheesecake is super easy and using different extract flavors makes it a new experience every time (p. 500). Brussel sprouts in browned butter (p. 176). I have always like them but this twist makes them really wonderful; even my hubby commented on them. Island pork chops (p. 345) and Jill's coleslaw (p. 201) are also outstanding.

I have dozens of family favorites from each of her books. I'm never at a loss for something to cook.

Can't wait to receive her new slow cooker book.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need Dana's books, September 26, 2004

This review is from: 500 More Low-Carb Recipes: 500 All New Recipes From Around the World (Paperback)
How do I love Dana Carpender in a completely platonic low carb life saver kind of way? Let me count the ways. Her new cookbook is fabulous. If you don't have it, you simply must get it. So many great looking recipes. As soon as my copy arrived, I read it cover to cover and am about to read it again. We are trying a different recipe every night. We have tried several already and they are very good. We're gonna have another one tonight. I have all of her cookbooks and this one is fab. Her books offer a lot of variety of flavors, which is essential to keeping any way of eating interesting. I'm trying to broaden my taste horizens, and her books give me lots of options. I use her cookbooks everyday. I recommend them all the time, but I don't loan them out. I would be lost if I did! She makes low carb low effort, which makes my life significantly easier. Thanks Dana!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, September 25, 2004
This review is from: 500 More Low-Carb Recipes: 500 All New Recipes From Around the World (Paperback)
I'm still reading the Introduction in this book, but so far I'm finding a lot of great advice and reminders. For example, Dana points out that eating low carb is a whole lifestyle and not just a quick diet. There's no finish line to losing weight. Once you reach your goal, you need to continue eating healthy for the rest of your life. If you go back to your old eating habits, you'll look like you did when you ate that way.

She warns that the low-carb processed foods that are showing up on the grocery store shelves are STILL mostly processed (low-carb) junk food. You shouldn't try to duplicate your standard American diet just by substituting low carb versions of junk food. Low carb is about getting back to basic, unprocessed, "REAL" foods and not just about counting the carbs in food. She believes in LOW carb, not no carb. She also mentions that you might need to keep an eye on calories, (although you can eat a lot more calories on low-carb than you ever could on low-fat and still lose weight).

The recipes in this book look really good. Some of the recipes listed on the back cover are Thai Beef Lettuce Wraps, UnPotato and Sausage Soup, Mexican Cabbage Soup, French Toasty Eggs, Chipotle-Cheese Fauxtatoes, Chili Relleno Casserole, Baked Sole in Creamy Curry Sauce, Swedish Meatballs, and Easy Low Carb Fudge.

I've been eating low-carb for over 6 years and am convinced that it's a very healthy way to eat. I've had my cholesterol checked 9 times in 6 years and it's improved and remains good from eating this way. It's great to be able to eat good food that fills you up and keeps you full for hours and still be able to lose weight.

This book would be very helpful to anyone following a low-carb way of eating. I would definitely recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars More great stuff!, November 30, 2004

My favorite low carb cookbook was Dana's first, 500 Low Carb Recipes. Now this will be my second favorite, probably. The Guacamole Eggs, the Unpotato and Sausage Soup, and several of the Quiche recipes are already family favorites.

One thing about Dana's books: there's something for everyone! She has many vegetarian dishes, and stuff like graham crackers and spoon bread, that help people realize there's more to low carbing than bacon with bacon. And using her great instructions, I'm finally making omelettes like a pro.

This is a great gift for good cooks, and those, (like me) who are aspiring to that state. And the ingredients aren't that exotic...most of the recipes use ingredients you have around anyway.

All in all, a fantastic followup.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dana keeps me on track!, December 20, 2004
This review is from: 500 More Low-Carb Recipes: 500 All New Recipes From Around the World (Paperback)
Out of all the low-carb cookbooks saturating the market for the last year or so, Ms. Carpender's books are by far the most valuable and user friendly. I cut out sugar and starches almost two years ago, and if it weren't for these cookbooks, I'd have fallen off the wagon long ago. 500 More Low-Carb Recipes is chock-full of delicious concoctions that are easy to make and even better to eat! Many of the recipes make use of simple, fresh, REAL FOOD ingredients and require a minimal amount of prep and cook time. Dana always explains a recipe perfectly, so you're never caught off-guard with a recipe that takes longer than you thought to prepare. I have no patience for those low-carb naysayers who say that you have to eat the same food all the time with this way of life. If you bought this cookbook, you'd be given an amazing array of incredible, healthy food choices for you and your family to eat for a very long time!

Dana Carpender never fails to bring you delicious recipes for "every" low carb(LC)lifestyle. You will find this book versatile with a garden of recipe choices. There are new yeast breads, new deserts, and new main fare that will leave you asking "are you sure this is low carb"? She is a gift to those of us who know LC is the magic bullet we've all been looking for... I've lost over 100lbs eating Atkins LC and doing moderate exercise (1hr/3-5x/wk) and Dana's recipes have been my saving grace! This book is worth every penny and praised for every peice of bread and slice of cheesecake I've eaten while sheding every one of those 100 pounds!

*Please note optimal weight loss occurs through maintaining an intake of 20 carbs or less untill you have reached your weight loss goal* Very easy to do using the recipes in this book-yes even the desserts! As far as exercise, I didn't even exercise the first few months and I stil lost weight rather quickly. Exercise simply speeds you throught the process; for me it equated to about 6-7lbs a week while I was very over weight, at a lower weight it is around 4-5lbs a week for me. Also keep it healthy - don't buy the processed LC snack foods, make them using Dana's recipes, they taste better and don't have cancer causing partially hydrogenated oils! Very - very important to cut from your diet! Good luck and I hope this review is helpful.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too many sugar alcohol's and hard-to-find ingredients, September 17, 2008
This review is from: 500 More Low-Carb Recipes: 500 All New Recipes From Around the World (Paperback)
While this book has lots of different recipes i have found only a few that I would actually eat or cook for two main reasons. First, almost all of the baking includes sugar alcohol's also known as "polyols". Some claim that by using these sugar substitutes you can deduct carbohydrates from the recipe. For me, I have a hard time digesting polyols. They completely disrupts my stomach causing an unpleasant feeling. In my opinion no dessert is worth that. I am not alone on this either just look up polyols or sugar alcohol's and you will find a host of problems with them. So, I was unable to bake any of the desserts in this book due to the fact that they all contain sugar alcohol's.

Secondly, the other recipes in this book require lots of unfamiliar and hard to find products. The author recommends finding some of these items online. I have a hard time with cookbooks that use hard to find ingredients which this book does. I have gone to every health food store I could think of and majority of the items needed to complete the recipes are not sold there.

To me this book isn't well balanced. While it is low carb its not necessarily health.
