You'll find that the manufacturer of the hard drive (HD) you receives varies, and is a 5400 rpm. I only give it a 4 star because of the problems in installing the HD and operating system:

1. Hardware installation is relatively easy with the correct tools, but be aware that this HD is thinner than the OEM HD that came with the macbook. This doesn't affect the ability of the HD to fit in or run on the macbook, but it may appear to be incorrect, so don't be discouraged.

2. Installing OS X on the hard drive is not possible without OS X 10.5 or higher (i.e. 'Tiger' or earlier will not recognize the HD during the install, and will not allow reformatting and described below).
No matter what OS X you use, once you've installed the HD, you'll have to go into the 'Disk Utility' and reformat/partition the HD by erasing it. I ended up having to buy the Lion (10.7) OS X and installing that, after first formatting/partitioning the HD by erasing it in the 'Disk Utility' option, before the OS X could find the HD. After the HD is reformatted and found by the OS X, installation is normal. I spent hours researching and talking with Apple tech to discover this, and I'm only assuming this erase tactic would have worked on Leopard.

All of this only takes a few minutes to complete, but it will take hours/days to get the HD up and running in your MacBook without this knowledge. Hope this helps someone and good luck!

An apple store employee recommended this hard drive to replace my crashed hard drive in my old MacBook. They are less expensive than buying one directly from the apple store and easy to install.

This HD is working great now that I have installed it. One issue to consider is that when re-installing your operating system "Tiger" from your re-boot disks this HD drive will not except it. I took my computer with HD installed to the apple store to boot a newer OS. Gist is my original boot disks did not work when following the directions provided by apple. Another issue that I noticed was that the overall thickness of the HD was thinner than the original OEM HD causing the fit to be slightly misaligned. I used a screwdriver to hold it level before installing the bar that locks the HD in place. Overall, I realize this is a HD that is meant to be universal and that my computer is pretty old. I would recommend this HD, just plan on making a trip to apple to help get the OS booted depending on your computer skills. Great value when compared to what you will pay if you take your computer in for a new HD from apple. Thanks

After my macbook took a dive and killed my hard drive, I took it to the apple bar, only to find out they wanted to sell me a 250G hard drive for $175, as well as $40 to install it. This was less than $60 and took 5 minutes to install! Best idea ever.

Fits and works perfect, Nonetheless, it's a little bert noisy. Installation was easy, but you need to have the essential tools.
