Marvelous Sampler to Enchanting Cities of the World!,
By
This review is from: 501 Must-Visit Cities (Paperback)
501 MUST-SEE CITIES is the literary equivalent of those gourmet sampler boxes featuring 100 varied and sinfully delicious candies. It provides concise but insightful snap-shots of over 500 of the most interesting cities of the world. It's a must purchase for those weighing their travel options or for all those 'travellers' who want to scope out far-away destinations from the comfort of their armchair.
The book, a British import, is divided into five sections: Europe & the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Australia & New Zealand and Americas & The Caribbean. Each section is sub-divided by area and country. For example, the Europe & the Middle East section, which takes up 284 of the book's 544 pages, is divided into Western Europe/Belgium, Western Europe/Ireland, Western Europe/France, etc. Each city rates a one- or sometimes two-page spread with a color photo, short but punchy history and info on 'When to go,' 'Don't miss' attractions and 'You should know' odd facts. While all the usual suspects are here - London, Paris, Tokyo, Hollywood, etc. - there are hundreds more few of us casual travellers were aware of and even a couple of cities you wonder about visiting, such as Algiers! Included in the undiscovered gems category are such destinations as Evora, Bangor, Poznan, Colonia del Sacremento, Arnhem, Byblos, Ouro Preto, Ubud, Nikko, Lubeck, Yaroslavl, Udaipur, Chiang Mai, Ghadames, Adelaide, Oaxaca, Darjeeling and so many more. In short, 501 MUST-SEE CITIES is a treat, interesting and informative, a well-produced and inexpensive eye on the world. Pick up a copy, open the book to any page and see what appealing destinations lie beyond the horizon! Recommended.
