5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent experiment book for ages 4-12!
Covered in 501 Science Experiments is Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology/Geography, Physics and Weather all separated with handy tabs. This book is friendly to both a homeschool and classroom environment and I've been looking for an organized experiment book like this for a while. Easy to do experiments most of them are with everyday materials.

2.0 out of 5 stars bad science
These are not "experiments" and the science is often bad and often not explained at all. These are great kid's activities and they can be used to illustrate many science concepts. But the teacher needs to make sure that the correct scientific concept illustrated by the activity. For example, #6 is called "Making Gravity" but gravity is not made at all with this...

Easy to do experiments most of them are with everyday materials.

This is a hardcover binder type book with the inside pages wire bound, each section has a page to track the experiments done which is very handy.

These are not "experiments" and the science is often bad and often not explained at all. These are great kid's activities and they can be used to illustrate many science concepts. But the teacher needs to make sure that the correct scientific concept illustrated by the activity. For example, #6 is called "Making Gravity" but gravity is not made at all with this activity, rather centrifugal force. So, to you this book you need to make sure you understand the science involved and provide your own explanation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book. One warning - don't mix vinegar and bleach!, July 4, 2011
This review is from: 501 Science Experiments (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book of experiments for kids. Most of the experiments have a lot of great potential for fun and learning, yet require very simple and safe tools that most people will have on hand.

I do want to issue a STRONG WARNING that at least one activity in the book calls for combining vinegar and bleach, which is potentially toxic (produces deadly chlorine gas). The book does not warn kids about the potential hazards of this combination, and thus this is a major flaw. It would also be nice if the book gave a more detailed explanation of the science behind the more complicated experiments. However, these are the only two drawbacks, and this is probably the best science book I've found for my son (who is nine). Aside from the aforementioned problems, almost all of the experiments are safer, easier, and friendlier - not to mention more educational - than most activities that I've seen in other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Experiments the way to go!, December 5, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 501 Science Experiments (Hardcover)
I ordered 501 Science Experiments, because one of the teachers at school used it for the Science Club Summer Camp 2009, and the kids were so excited about their experiments, they would come and tell me about what happened, how it work and the process that was used (these were children that were 3-9 years old). Their enthusiasm excited me. I borrowed her book and when I say the very first experiment The Sun and Us I was hooked (more-so because as I read, I remember what the kids had said),so I thought it would be a great asset for my Youth Division at Church.

I went in search of 501 Science Experiments, and the only place I could find it was on Amazon.com, which I had not purchased anything from previously. Even if the site was not a good place to shop (which it is an excellent user friendly site, and I will be shopping there again), I think I still would appreciate this book, it has so much to enjoy.

I am even more pleased that I purchased 501 Science Experiments, because my granddaughter recently said that she does not like science and this book, with all the experiments will give her a chance to see that science is really fun and exciting. I think she, along with my other babies (ages 3-17) will get a kick out of doing these experiments.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Science Experiments for Your Young Child...Go for it!, August 9, 2009

Just because Amazon's website states that this title is currently unavailable doesn't mean you should "close the book" on finding this fantastic collection of science experiments for your child. There are six major categories of experiments: Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology & Geography, Physics, and Weather; each section is set apart with a divider tab, and within each section, there are topics for science experiments; each science experiment contains a title, a statement of what process you will be working on, materials needed, and a fact box with new information.

The cartoon-like graphics add a certain panache to the eyes of the participant(s). There is even some humor in the illustrations which will be an invitation for the child and his or her parent(s) who will be working through these 501 experiences. Yes, I said "experiences", because each of these experiments will be an influence on your child's learning and ability to participate in discovering our world of science, with a discipline of developing a daily routine, not just a "let's get it all done" this week. It's a long range program. 501 Science Experiments, let's see, that could be 501 days.

Were my children young enough to work on this book with me, they would be in the primary grades, and I would spend 20 to 30 minutes on each experiment, probably only one per night. The challenge is to keep your child's interest without having your child neglect other subjects. Also, interacting with a book will have a great effect on keeping your child's focus on a diversity of learning tools, beyond games and the computer.

Too often, as the school year advances, the topic of science experiments emerges and everyone rushes to the nearest library and expects the perfect experiment to be sitting on a book shelf. This wonderful book will guide you to help your child balance his or her interests in the six subjects, eventually, focusing on a particular area that stretches the mind and imagination. Even with grown children, anyone could stretch their own "brain power" by using this as a refresher. Here's to Science!
