Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-10-A year-by-year tour through some of the popular American music, films, and television shows of past decades. Trends in media, entertainment, fashion, and car design are also described. Significant political and news events are arranged chronologically in sidebars. Epstein is well versed in popular culture and does not hesitate to interject his own opinions, highlight films that he considers to be significant (such as Caf? Flesh), or mention his views of the less-than-perfect talents of some highly successful entertainers. And chances are that the occasional missing or oddly hyphenated word and use of media jargon won't faze most readers, although some may be disappointed that not all of the entertainers and fashions mentioned are illustrated. However, there are numerous color photographs of other celebrities, period designs, and clothing styles; color panels behind the text; and large-type subheadings, resulting in a layout that's lively and highly visual. The one-page indexes are superfluous; page numbers often refer to only one mention of important media personalities even if information about them appears throughout the volumes. Still, these titles are more comprehensive than other decades series such as those published by Gareth Stevens and Enslow.

This review is from: The 50s (20th Century Pop Culture) (Library Binding)
This book is not worth the price. It appears hastily written and juvenile in scope. It seems to be a quick cash in on pop culture. The photos are mostly medicore. The 70's and 80's in this series are the same: really so-so.
