Book Description

51 Portuguese Idioms presents 51 Brazilian Portuguese Street Smart words & expressions in the context of 102 everyday situations.

* Follow seven Brazilian characters as they go about their daily lives
* Learn colloquial expressions in the context of real-life situations
* Get to know more about Brazil through our Cultural Notes
* Improve your grammar with pointers to our blog posts and video lessons
* Build current vocabulary for personal and professional relationships

Each word and expression is presented in two different situations that mirror daily interactions in modern day Brazil.

The 102 situations are presented in English, so you can focus your attention completely on the Street Smart vocabulary that you are learning. The sentences that contain the 51 colloquial words and expressions are presented in Portuguese followed by their English translation. Through these Portuguese/English examples you will build vocabulary beyond the colloquial expressions that are the primary goal of this book.

Through our more than ten years of teaching Portuguese as a foreign language, we have taught students from all walks of life, different cultural backgrounds, and varying previous experience with the language. One thing seemed to unite all the students: The challenge to bridge the gap between the Portuguese they learned in textbooks and the Portuguese that they were exposed to in real-life interactions with Brazilians.

Our aim is to help you cross that bridge and speak like a Brazilian: 51 Portuguese Idioms brings you the Portuguese that you won't learn in traditional books or classes. With this book you will learn idiomatic expressions, modern day slang, and popular sayings that are pervasive in everyday real-life communication.

“While editing 51 Portuguese Idioms, I came across roughly 15 phrases that I hadn't seen before. It's not as if I just started learning Portuguese last year or anything, because in reality, I've been doing it for close to a decade. The fact that 51 Portuguese Idioms goes beyond all that I have seen and heard while dealing with aspects of Brazilian culture and the Portuguese language on a daily basis is no small feat.” (Adam Lee, Editor of Eyes on Brazil)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Portuguese Language Resource November 23, 2012
Format:Paperback
I bought this book right before moving to Brazil, and I cannot speak enough to how it has helped me, especially initially. I spoke Spanish, but no Portuguese, and this book helped me greatly with how ACTUAL Brazilians speak - I shared this book with my Brazilian friends and they knew all of these idioms, and said that they were all very common phrases. I love the layout of the book, and the Street Smart Brazil site has even more helpful resources.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Book November 9, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I found this book very useful. It is surprising how much you use colloquial expressions in your own language from day to day without realising that they are!
I use these new expressions all the time now.

More About the Author

Drawing on my passion for Brazilian Portuguese language and culture, I applied many years of experience teaching Portuguese to grow Street Smart Brazil, a Portuguese language school and Brazilian cultural center. I have also taught Portuguese at the University of California, Berkeley, and currently teach at the University of San Francisco.

My passion is to teach Portuguese and create Portuguese language books for adult learners who want to communicate better and more naturally in Portuguese using colloquial language and mastering key points that are overlooked by the traditional textbooks.

I hold colloquial language in very high regard. That is why I named my Portuguese language school Street Smart Brazil :) When I studied English in Brazil, no one ever taught me how to say simple things like "What's up?" When I first got to the US, I spoke fluent English but sounded as if I had materialized out of a textbook. Well, textbooks are important, but when we step in a foreign country or find ourselves among international friends, colloquial language is the real thing.
