5.0 out of 5 stars Great product
I'm amending my initial review as it was posted in haste. This product is great and I recommend its purchase to anyone in need of a good camp cup. An excellent buy for the lightweight backpacker who wants to keep gear at a minimum, as this cup serves as a cooking vessel and eating bowl. I also recommend the silicone lid that is sold for this product; helps water boil...

Contact seller before you purchase this item. Mine arrived and it was a grey color? When I looked inside there were chips taken out, under the "chips" was the stainless steel. I could tell because stainless steel has a metal look that is not mistakable. The "chips" looked like some kind of grey coating, don't want to say paint, but not pure SS as SS doesn't chip away. Would hate to see anyone boil water in the cup and have "chips" of whatever?? dangerous substance mixing with water you think you purifying. Maybe I got a dud or a fake, please be careful. I contacted Amazon to inform them since I was unable to contact seller directly about this. I hope they check into this, don't want to see anyone hurt or possibly poisoned if using this to boil water or ?? Better safe than sorry. Still looking for a quality replacement for this item, maybe I'll go to military store across town & see US issue up close!

Didn't other products like dog food and children's toy's come from China??, think they had safety issues as well...hum...anyway good luck to anyone who wants to use this product. Maybe it's hit or miss on what you get coming out of China, I can only speak to my experience with this product, meaning the one I received. I hike and camp a lot and won't risk it, it's just not worth it to me to cheap out on such an important item in my kit. I spent a few more bucks and got high quality, safe, well tested equipment from tried and true companies. You could sand, polish, and buff to hearts content- it won't turn this into stainless...

this 512 GI Canteen cup is the real thing. I was in the USARMY and I used this same type of Canteen cup for the entire time I was in the service. The Modern soldiers are getting away from useing them. But let me tell you the possiblities with this thing is endless. Just recently when I seperated from service and returned home my older brother, that is obcessed with anything military and a huge fan of Bear Grylles, Absolutely went wild over all my gear and was really interested in my canteen/canteen cup/Canteen Carrier. After introducing me to the Bear Grylles serries and saw his enthusiasim for survival he asked me to teach him how to do what "Bear" does. But for some reason he really wanted my canteen cup. So I came here to amazon and ordered the one you are looking at now. On his 36th birthday the cup showed up the day prior and I was the first to look at it to make sure it was like my real military issue. It was. of course mine was a lot more shinyer than his new one but mine had been in use for probaly 30 or so years.

If you are looking for this kind of product, get this one on this page. If you do you WILL BE GETTING MILITARY ISSUE EQUIPTMENT. I also suggest you going and buying the following;

- 1 qt Canteen (plastic)
- 1 qt Canteen Cup
- 1 qt Cammo Canteen Cover
- at least 2 or preferably more, "Alice Clips"
to attatch to your belt or gear
- 1 pistol belt

Canteen fits into the Canteen cup, which fits into the Canteen Carior, the alice clips are attatched to the back of the carrior, and the alice clips attatch the rig to your pistol belt.

If anyone has any further questions about military gear dont hesitate to send me a letter.

4.0 out of 5 stars This IS STAINLESS STEEL!!!, October 25, 2010

This IS stainless steel! There is NO baked on finish that is "toxic".

I like many others felt this product was cheap garbage when I opened the package. I saw the made in china sticker and instantly thought the finish was baked on based on its appearance and country of origin. I was disappointed, but I weld and know finishes and metals, and so I decided to test the cup:

First thing I did was boil water in it on the stove for 5 min... no flaking. I thought, ok its a good baked on finish and they ensured it will perform to their product's intended use. So then I took it outside and used the mapp torch on it. The whole bottom was cherry red and no flaking or more importantly burning! Then I repeated flame to the inside of the cup after dousing with water. Again, it was cherry red and no visible flaking or burning!! All along in the process of boiling water and heating the cup with the torch I never experienced noxious fumes or any strange smells. Then I went to the final test, I took 220 wet/dry paper out and sanded the inside bottom... lo and behold it looks like my stainless steel sink now! Again no paint dust or flecks were in the bottom after sanding just normal metal easily cleaned out with water. I also tested for aluminum and its not, nor does it dent easily like aluminum as I tried that approach as well. Therefore, I conclude that this is indeed stainless steel.

Again, this IS STAINLESS STEEL!!! It is just not polished like sinks, pots, and knives are, take out your sandpaper or steel wool and you'll have a shiny looking canteen cup. I suspect that is how they save money on this cup by not polishing it. Its hard to find a canteen cup not made by the parent company that makes these and this is a good price compared to other stores that gouge you on these things, as the originals are getting hard to find.

This cup works fine and dandy. Just dont buy the suggested amazon pairing with the rothco 140 gi style canteen and canteen cover. The cup will not fit in the cover. Maybe if you grind the top edge of the cup it would, but im kinda disappointed with amazon for recommending the duo.

2.0 out of 5 stars REAL vs. FAKE, May 26, 2011
This review is from: 512 G.I. Type Stainless Steel Canteen Cup (Misc.)
I have read many reviews regarding these "G.I. Type" canteen cups. Many people have proven and/or claimed that these were not, in fact, the Military issued canteen cups. I did not purchase mine from amazon but I will tell you where to get the 100% genuine ones (posted below) and how to tell the fakes.

First, if it happens to say "Made in China," or Japan, or any other country besides the US, obviously it is not genuine. Next, if NO MARKINGS are visable at all, chances are it is not of US origin. In addition, these will not be a good "kidney" shaped cup that will fit the military canteens properly and perfectly. Also, you can just use common knowledge and expectations from this product and judge the quality of a US made product vs. a shotty overseas product. However, it IS all about quality control and not where it is made. But in this case, the quality is in the US made product.

These "winged" style cups, if genuine, have markings (NOT ALWAYS SAYING U.S. MADE of "U.S.") in between the two wings. Sometimes, only the manufacturer's initials will be present with the date, and sometimes it was be occompanied by the "US" marking. As previously stated, usually, there will be a date as well, indicating when it was produced. Also, you will be able to notice the quality of the steel as opposed to just a stainless-esque coating. Once again, DON'T PANIC IF IT DOESN'T SAY "US." Not all of them do. Just look for the date and some sort of initials of the manufacturer.

And here is where you can find the real one with no issues, but it is more money and you really do pay for what you pay for:

1.0 out of 5 stars This item is a TOY and smells TOXIC!, May 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 512 G.I. Type Stainless Steel Canteen Cup (Misc.)
I ordered two. I received one. The one I recieved stinks to high heaven and smells toxic. No way would I cook with this thing! It smells horrible, has some sort of toxic smelling coating on it, and has a sticker on it that says "MADE IN CHINA". I find it odd that Rothco would farm out the creation of Military Issue items to China. But the kicker of it all? The invoice I recieved states that this item is a TOY!

I shudder at the thought of innocent people actually cooking with a TOY that was MADE IN CHINA while thinking they are using a standard military issue item!! The color of the coating has changed where my fingers have touched the item and it leaves a toxic smell on my fingers, not to mention a dark residue. According to the invoice, the items that were shipped to me came from Makais dot com (Reference picture) but when I went to leave seller feedback it pulled up BIGFLYSPORTS.

I contacted Amazon and told them that the product was represented as a Military Supplier's manufactured item, but I recieved a TOY. Nowhere on the title or description of the product page does it say this is a toy. They gave me a full refund, including refunded postage, and are sending me a return label.

Product is very durable. I used this for backpacking and I boiled water twice for meal packets and also ate instant soup out of it and then made instant mashed potatoes out of it. This product is perfect for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chinese but not a total bust, June 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 512 G.I. Type Stainless Steel Canteen Cup (Misc.)
READ ENTIRE REVIEW, IMPORTANT SAFETY INFO.
I recieved this on time but was very concerned, as were others, about this item. It says stainless steel in the description but it comes with a weird powder coating on it. I'm not sure why stainless steel needs a powder coating over it. I sanded the coating off the bottom and it looks to be stainless steel under it, so i suppose with some elbow greas you can expose the true stainless steel. My main concern was if it was safe or not since it came with a big "Made in China" sticker on it. That combined with the powder coating had me concerned if it was safe to eat and drink our of. So I picked up a Lead Surface Test kit at work and tested this cup 4 different times. i tested the powder coating twice and i tested the exposed metal under the coating twice, all of these tests in a different spot. I am glad to say that all 4 tests were negative for lead, and this cup seems perfectly safe to use unless the coating starts to come off. If it does start to come off I would say just sand it all off and give yourself a basically new cup.
