513 G.I. STYLE ALUMINUM CANTEEN CUP

This is an old Vietnam style U.S. Army standard issue canteen cup that was replaced in the Army inventory sometime in the early 1980's. The newer style canteen cup has a sturdy wire handle in the shape of the letter "M". This canteen cup is made of aluminum and serves its intended purpose just right. You can drink from it, warm soup in it, wash/shave out of it, or whatever. The main problem with this style canteen cup is the handle. The handle is a "C" shape and is supposed to fold around the cup when not in use. When you wanted to use the cup with handle, you just un-folded it and had to wrestle with it. If you look closely at the pictures, there is a small slot with tabs that the handle slides into to lock it in place. Alot of times that lock did not work properly. There were many a times when I, as well as other soldiers, were in the chow line with a full canteen cup of coffee and the handle would pop out of its locked position and spill its contents all over. Also, those locking tabs are made of soft aluminum and are very easily damaged. Other than the problems with the handle, this was a pretty good canteen cup. If you don't mind the handle and just use your hands to hold the canteen cup, it serves its purpose. Just do not pick up the canteen cup without the handle if you are using it to warm some type of beverage. Once warmed the cup does get very hot to the touch (from experience). It can also be used with the standard issue U.S. Army metal 1 quart canteen and canvas cover. You may experience some problems with this canteen cup if you use the plastic 1 quart canteen and nylon cover. Reasonably priced. Only reson why I gave this 2 stars was because of the inherent problems with the handle lock/support.

The standard GI canteen does not fit in the product. The whole purpose of the product is to have the canteen fit snugly into the canteen cup to conserve space. Wasted my time ordering it and returning it.
