Editorial Reviews

2007 release from the Louisiana rapper, leader of the new 'Ratchet' movement that is changing America's cultural landscape in the same way that Lil' Jon's 'Crunk' movement altered Pop culture a few years back. Every music genre has it's landmark movements and moments and Hurricane Chris is leading this new charge. From the drum and bass driven tracks to the Rick James dance, the Ratchet movement reflects culture, attitude and swagger. And Hurricane Chris is all about that! Features the singles 'A Bay Bay', 'The Hand Clap' and more. RCA. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tropical Storm Chris, February 5, 2008
This review is from: 51/50 Ratchet (Audio CD)
Let's start off with the obvious when we talk about Hurlricane Chris(I meant to write that). He cant flow, he has no personality and there is nothing about him that distinguishes him from the tons of rappers out there from the south. To tell you the truth, he almost sounds like Lil Boosie! The best example of how wack he is, is when Cipha Sounds ripped him a new one on his show. Ay Bay Bay is another one of those terrible singles that you wish you never heard. You know things are bad when an up and coming singer like Nicole Wray couldnt save any track by appearing on it. Getting Money, Momma and Doin My Thang are prime examples of this. Then members of his wack crew Ratchet City contribute some terrible performances on here. Big Poppa and Hollyhood Bay Bay show up on the weak second single, The Handclap. Big Poppa would also appear on the wack tracks Bang and Doin My Thang. Even with these guest performances the worst of all would be the all-star weakmix of Ay Bay Bay with E-40, Jadakiss, The Game, Lil Boosie, Baby and Angie Locc. Hip hop laughable from Walk Like That "I flipped her over on her back and hit her with the lizard/I bim bim bim and I didnt even kiss her". LOL! There is one track that is not absolutely garbage and that's Playas Rock. I wouldnt recommend downloading it because it's not worth it. In short this album sucks on all levels. The beats are trash, the lyrics are pathetic and the guest appearances made this album even worser than it had to be. And to think XXL gave this slop an XL rating. Pity on those who still take that ragazine at face value.

PS: How are you going to take the word "ratchet" and use it to mean hood? EVERYBODY knows that that word is Upnorth slang for burner. You see what I'm saying? These little kids are messing up the game!

2.0 out of 5 stars 2-1/2 stars -- Like Sirius Radio said, grown men should not be making this kind of music, February 22, 2008
This review is from: 5150 Ratchet (Snyp) (Audio CD)
I remember Napster was featuring a hot single a few months ago from Hurricane Chris called "A Bay Bay", and I was like, "What kind of name is Hurricane Chris?" Anyway, I listened to the song and I wasn't too impressed by it. And I feel the same way about his album, 51/50 Ratchet.

Now, Chris is only eighteen, so it's probably safe to say that he doesn't have a whole lot of life experience, but what he's talking about isn't anything new. You'll find subpar examples of all the usual suspects: sex ("Walk Like That"; "Touch Me"), blingin' ("Doin' My Thang") and an end-of-album remix-of-the-first-single (with too many guest stars to mention, although the Game drops a nice verse). Even his ode to his mother, "Momma", only comes off as average.

The only songs that really stand out to me on here are "The Hand Clap" (which I hate to admit) and "New Fashion". But on the latter, it's ironic that Chris is calling out wack emcees that only rap about their money and their bling because that's exactly what HE was doing earlier on the album. In the end, 51/50 Ratchet makes Chris another name to add to the list of bad hurricanes along with G and Katrina.

Forget the fact that this guy acts like he is the hardest thing since rocked candy. Forget the fact that he only weighs 50 lbs in wet clothes and your sister can beat him up. Give him the benefit. Pretend that he actually is what every rapper claims to be. Tell yourself that this guy has something to offer the game and take rap to the next level. Now prepare to be disappointed. Puff-a-wind Chris is nothing more than another gimmick rapper thrown in the toilet with Soulja Toy and MIMS. One hit wonders. Flush! He talks about how tough he is. He talks about his hood. He talks about his fam. He talks about his label. Gimmick Rapper who shovels the words to the gimmick fans who wear CZs and XXXXL shirts and they eat it up. Bottom line: If your belt buckle spins, your watch blings with Cubics, and you think Lil' Wayne is up there with Pac and B.I.G., this disc is for you.
