On the Cheap in the City by the Bay,

This review is from: 52 Adventures in San Francisco (52 Series) (Cards)
San Francisco is one of my favorite vacation destinations. But, it can be very expensive. If you are like me, you may want a guide to the city that is inexpensive and leads you to destinations that will not cost you a fortune. 52 Adventures in San Francisco, a deck of cards with short descriptions of destinations on the back, is a good place to start. From used book stores to Chinatown and walks along Crissy Field, it includes a variety of nice venues. This review gets 3 stars because, while I like the deck of cards concept, I was not completely satisfied with the product. First, there is some overlap in the adventures. There is a card for birding in San Francisco, and birding at Lake Merced. There is morning at North Beach, and afternoon at North Beach. Castro gets its own card, and figures into the Tale of Two Neighborhoods. On some cards, directions are clear. On others, there is an assumption that you are already familiar with the city. For tourists, that can be a problem because San Francisco is one of the most difficult cities to find your way around in. Even taking public transportation is something of an adventure as you may need the BART (Bay Area Regional Transport, aka Bay Area Recurring Tragedy) website just to manage the trip, and San Francisco's city transport is also not terribly user friendly, at least for those who don't already know the routes. Finally, I think I would have preferred photos on the cards to the paintings that graced them instead. Still, if you want to do the City on the Bay within a budget, this is a good set to get. Like the destinations it presents, the product is not expensive, and if you can find the locations it recommends, you can have a good time on your vacation. Here's a hint for budget concious travellers. The card for Fort Mason does not mention the Youth Hostel on site. But if you want to stay in the city for under $30 a night, this is a great place and the staff at the hostel can direct you to all the destinations in this deck of cards. Have fun exploring.
