Book Description

July 3, 2012

Being America’s favorite heiress is a dirty job…but someone’s gotta do it.

Lexington Larrabee has never had to work a day in her life. After all, she’s the heiress to the multi-billion-dollar Larrabee Media empire. And heiresses are not supposed to work. But then again, they’re not supposed to crash brand-new Mercedes convertibles into convenience stores on Sunset Boulevard either.

Which is why, on Lexi’s eighteenth birthday, her ever-absent, tycoon father decides to take a more proactive approach to her wayward life. Every week for the next year, she will have to take on a different low-wage job if she ever wants to receive her beloved trust fund. But if there’s anything worse than working as a maid, a dishwasher, and a fast-food restaurant employee, it’s dealing with Luke, the arrogant, albeit moderately attractive, college intern her father has assigned to keep tabs on her.

In Jessica Brody's hilarious “comedy of heiress” about family, forgiveness, good intentions, and best of all, second chances, Lexi learns that love can be unconditional, money can be immaterial, and regardless of age, everyone needs a little saving. And although she might have fifty-two reasons to hate her father, she only needs one reason to love him.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-Lexington Larabee has grown up getting everything she wants without lifting a finger. Then, she crashes her brand-new Mercedes convertible into a convenience store after a night of partying hard and everything changes. Her distant billionaire father decides to withhold the trust fund she's been counting on receiving on her 18th birthday until she has completed 52 menial jobs (cleaning houses, filling tacos, washing dishes, etc.), one each week for the next year. As if that isn't humiliating enough, he doesn't even administer this punishment himself. Instead, he appoints his college intern, Luke, to be Lexi's babysitter. He drives her to and from her jobs and assesses her progress. While the plot is predictable with the requisite romance and happy ending, the story has surprising charm. Lexi's growth is believable-as believable as it can be within the confines of the premise, anyway-and readers see the specific lessons she learns as she works. For example, after a week as a maid, she realizes that "no one notices the help," a lesson that she uses later in the book during a nail-biting undertaking of corporate espionage to help her father's company. Brody also delivers an occasional turn of phrase (Lexi describes her sleeping dog as "a perfect little doughnut of fur") that makes this book perhaps not a standout, but at least a better example of the bad-girl-turned-good narrative.-Gretchen Kolderup, New Canaan Library, CTα(c) Copyright 2011. More About the Author

Jessica Brody knew from a young age that she wanted to be a writer. She started self "publishing" her own books when she was seven years old, binding the pages together with cardboard, wallpaper samples and electrical tape.

After graduating from Smith College in 2001 where she double majored in Economics and French and minored in Japanese, Jessica later went on to work for MGM Studios as a Manager of Acquisitions and Business Development. In May of 2005, Jessica quit her job to follow her dream of becoming a published author.

In four short years, Jessica has sold nine novels (two adult novels to St. Martin's Press and seven young adult novels to Farrar, Straus, Giroux.) The Fidelity Files, her debut, released in stores (in real binding) in June of 2008 and the follow-up, Love Under Cover in November 2009. The Karma Club, Jessica's debut young adult novel released in April of 2010 and her second YA release, My Life Undecided hit bookstores in June 2011.

52 Reasons to Hate My Father (which was recently optioned for film) just recently released in July 2012 and Unremembered, (also optioned for film), the first book in a new teen sci-fi series, will be released in March 2013.

Jessica's books are published and translated in over fifteen foreign countries including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Indonesia, Russia, Brazil, Portugal, Poland, Bulgaria, Israel, and Taiwan.

Jessica now works full time as a writer and producer. She currently splits her time between Los Angeles and Colorado.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sassy and Fun! December 8, 2012
Format:Hardcover
The short pitch: Hilarious and fun, this is definitely one to read if you need a good LOL moment!

Now the only thing that I didn't absolutely LOVE was the romance. While it was endearingly sweet, it wasn't very well developed or believable. The two characters were hating each other, slowly (like, turtle slowly) becoming friends, then BOOM. Love.It just didn't match and I really didn't like it. It was more like it was thrown in for the more...crazier stuff that happens in the second half of the book.

Character development is obviously a giant thing here and I loved that! Lexi was such a...well, let's face it. She was a huge, spoiled bitch in the beginning, but by the end, you have this fun character who jokes around, but knows what's right and that she's not entitled to everything. And it wasn't as sudden as the romance, trust me. You could see her personality change from spoiled to caring. She learns so much throughout the entire book and it was so...I can't say touching, since it wasn't, really. But it was amazing seeing how much she slowly changed.

So I read this during the summer and let me say, it fit the season perfectly. It was a fun, light read that will make you laugh and make you smile. It will fill you with emotional turmoil, so BEWARE. 52 Reasons was a wonderful read that made me want to read more of Jessica Brody's books! And I have no doubt they'll be just as amazing and sassy as this one! Definitely pick this up if you've liked her other books or if you're tired of all those sci-fi/fantasy/paranormal books!

2.0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent main character October 8, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Lexington Larrabee has everything she wants. She doesn't even have to lift a finger to get it. New cars, huge house and tons of money for shopping. If she totals a car, she can just get a new one. When she drunk drives her brand new car into a connivence store right before her eighteenth birthday though, her father decides he has had enough. It's time for Lexington to learn what it means to grow up and earn money, and she's not going to like it. When she turns eighteen and heads to see Bruce for her trust fund check she is informed that before she can have her money, she has to complete the task her father has decided on. She must work 52 jobs over the next year. Each week she will have a new low-paying job to suffer through. Lexington can't even believe it. She's never had to do anything for herself, let alone other people. She has a choice though, she can do the work and get the money or figure out how to live on her own without her father's billions.

This was a tricky book to rate. On one hand it was a light fast read and I enjoyed reading it. On the other hand though, there were a some major flaws that really bugged me. The top thing that annoyed me was how unrealistic Lexington was. In the beginning of the book she's all bling-bling, spoiled-brat, heiress and then by the end she's supposed to be super smart and not such a sucky person? I didn't see anything that would call for this change. She could have been a bit better of a person, but the whole 360 turnaround kind of threw me off. Of course, I've never known anyone that rich and spoiled, so...

Her father and all her brothers aren't complete idiots, so maybe she was just playing her part. It seems weird that she would keep the same friends though if she's a completely new person. They must be very loving and adapting friends. Then there's the very obvious love interest. I saw that coming as soon as he was mentioned. Then there's Rolando. Lexi and him are supposed to be BFFs, but he's only mentioned a few times. What!?

The other thing that bugged me was that "could care less". Lexi used it a couple of times in thought and dialogue. It's "couldn't care less"!!!! I mean, it fits the person I'm picturing well, but I don't think that person could solve a big mystery.

I wish there were any other characters to really talk about, but everyone was just a brief mention really. Once again proving that everything is all about Lexington Larrabee. I did like that there was mention of other Jessica Brody characters in this novel. It was brief, but if you are paying attention, you'll catch it. This was a quick fun read with a lot of funny parts. If you like reading about rich snobs who end up turning their lives around, this is exactly the book for you. I just find it all a bit unrealistic. Maybe someday, someone will prove me wrong.

First Line:
"My father is going to kill me."

Favorite Line:
"Come Monday morning I'm a frazzled mess."

5.0 out of 5 stars 52 Reasons to Hate My Father September 19, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Three words: Fun! Fun! Fun!

52 Reasons to Hate My Father by Jessica Brody is by far one of the funest stories I've ever read.

Fast-paced, full of charm and wit, I couldn't wait to turn each page. When I got to the end I was disappointed I had come to the end of the book. I wanted more! And such a great ending it was. I already miss all the characters.

Eighteen-year-old Lexington Larrabee is the heiress to the multibillion-dollar Larrabee Media empire. And man, does she have a lot to learn. She has never had to work a day in her life, that is until her father comes up with a bright idea of having her complete 52 jobs, one for every week for the next year. If she doesn't, she won't gain access to her trust fund. If she does, well, I'll leave it up to you to learn about her awesome journey.

And don't let the title scare you. It's not a hate book. A lot goes behind that title and when you reach the end, you will see why you mustn't judge a book by its cover (or title). HIGHLY recommended YA read! Two big thumbs up.

Author Jessica Brody always delivers. Always. Can't wait for her next release.

And can't wait to see it on the big screen!
