I spent several hours researching economical Jo to use for Aikido. I thought of making my own but local hardware stores (I went to three) didn't have the hardwood dowels I was looking for. I searched several websites and perused a plethora of Jo's from $100 Ipe and $80 Japanese White Oak to this 20 dollar Jo. I figured if I get a black belt I can buy a nicer one.
The first Jo I received had numerous small cracks which appeared to be very sharp to the touch and could potentially cause injury. I contacted the seller who promptly air mailed me a new Jo. The new Jo has a beautiful grain and is crack free. After a few days of testing it appears to be a great choice. It runs smoothly through hands, it is an appropriate diameter and seems to be working great! Price was very reasonable.

This staff seems to be able to stand up to anything. The first thing I did with this was to whack it against my tree, the staff was fine, my oak lost bark. This is an ideal weapon for those new to hand held combat, it is easy to master and almost impossible to hurt yourself with. Not much of a collector's item, but an awesome toy.

a lot of heft for the on contact practitioner,

if youre like me, youll eventually want to start smacking stuff with your equipment. that eventually swinging around in the air will not hold up to your increasing demands. this stick is solid. has a LOT of heft. meaning its heavy, when you strike an object you throw yourself into the swing and if the staff is heavy youre looking at increased striking power. so this staff is excellent for on contact practicing. the shipping speed was horrendous though, so if you buy this excellent stick, be prepared to wait a while. unless of course you choose 2 day delivery

This arrived on the day it was supposed to, so that was great, it arrived in a cardboard tube, which I found funny. The plastic wrap on the staff was rather difficult to remove, but I'm still glad it was there, every layer of protection helps. Once I started playing with it, I was surprised by how fun it was. I was very worried that I would end up looking ridiculous trying to learn with it, and being a beginner, but fortunately, it was rather simple to wield, and after just an hour or so, even started to feel natural, so much in fact, that my hand muscles have increased to the point where certain items I hold on a daily basis, felt significantly lighter, which took me off-guard. I accidentally threw my phone out of my pocket after getting a text, which was laugh worthy. The finish on the staff is amazing. Extremely smooth, very easy to glide through the hands. I did end up wrapping the middle section in medical tape (black) and I've yet to test whether that was a worthy addition or not, so far I'm considering removing it. Overall great product, and you don't need to feel intimidated by this staff, even a beginner should be able to get used to it.
