4.0 out of 5 stars New to photography so it's good fo rme
As some folks have said it's an auto focus lens, but not for the lower end Nikon bodies. It doesn't have the auto focus motor built in so you need to focus yourself. It's still called an auto focus lens because it will auto focus with the correct camera body.

I have a D3000 and it's a compact body so it needs the lenses that have the motor built in. If you...

3.0 out of 5 stars No auto focus for Nikon D40
I bought this lens a few weeks ago and found out that the lens looks different (it looks cheaper in my opinion) then it was pictured on Amazon and RitzCamare web pages. And I can not get "AutoFocus" feature on my Nikon D40 (in Amazon weg page and on the box it says it is a AutoFocus lens!). Do not get this lens if you have Nikon D40 and "AutoFocus" is a must. And the...

If you look at the back of the lens where it mounts to the camera you can see a silver keyed pin and this is what's driven by the cameras that have an auto focus motor. If you don't want to focus manually on these cameras, you'll need the one without the drive pin.

Even without auto focus built in the lens is easy to use and the pictures are clear. While you are buying, be sure to get a uv filter for it in 52mm. I had a spare because I bought two for my d3000 when I purchased it. Also, since you need to focus, make sure you adjust the view finder so your focus is correct. I had mine set incorrectly and when I though the picture looked good I was actually focused on something else.

Another thing, the zoom and focus are quite stiff when brand new and loosen up as you use it. I've got about 200 pictures on it and it's good. It feels good and solid. The Nikon one feels a little nicer but the price for the Quantaray is good.

My next purchase will probably be a 18-200 that they make so I don't have to switch out from the 18-55 and 55-200 on the fly.

I was surprised to see how good this lens is for the price.

It is a great lens for taking candid shots.

So far it's been a good experience.

i bought this lens for my friend, and i tested it before wrapping it up to make sure everything was working. this lens is just as good as the nikkor one of the same range, sure there is no VR and and no auto focus, but its for an SLR, so why would you need autofocus, anyway? if you want a good portrait lens, look no further. at half the price of nikon, you cant really go wrong.
