Product Description

Size: 58mm

This is a premium 58mm wide angle lens with 0.45x magnification for cameras and camcorders. The lens will multiply angle view of digital/video cameras by 0.45 times, which more than doubles the angle of view of the camera. It's great for landscapes or recording in situations where a little creative curvature of field is wanted for a certain style.

This lens works on all Cameras & Camcorders with 58mm size Lens Filter thread! And it can be separated in two pieces (unscrewed): macro part and wide angle part. So you can use it both ways: like macro lens (without wide angle part) and like wide angle with macro together! This is a very unique feature of this lens for its price.

Features:

Built-in Macro lens for extreme close-up shots

BUYER BEWARE (12/30/10 update):
I have received several comments on my review (Thanks, James!), have read several other reviews and have looked at the pictures posted by other users. Please be aware that the most recent pictures and the some of the most recent purchasers have NOT received the same product that is pictured. Please review the pictures that I have posted compared to several other users. If your results are significantly different than mine using a Canon EOS 18MM lens (or equivalent), then it is possible that you received a different product. If you received the same product, there should not be significant distortion in the picture or black rings around the edge when using the same lens at 18MM.

-------------------

I purchased this lens attachment in lieu of purchasing a brand-name wide angle lens. I wasn't expecting much, since it was only $10. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by the results.

I tested this attachment with my Canon EOS XSi and an EF-S 18-55mm lens, fully closed to 18mm. I shot images with and without the wide angle attachment, and noted a clear difference between the width of the target area. I viewed the images side by side on my large monitor (32" LCD HDTV) and did not see a significant loss of image quality. There was slight loss of sharpness, but not much.

Using the macro attachment with the same lens, I noticed a clear difference in the minimum focal distance of the lens, but I did not notice any loss of picture quality. The close up image was very sharp when viewed on the computer screen.

In both cases, autofocus did not work properly, so I had to use manual focus to achieve the best pictures.

C'mon, for seven bucks, you can't go wrong. It provides the wide angle advertised with some reasonable barrel distortion giving a slight fisheye aspect to the photo. I bought a 52-58 mm adapter to go along with it and attached it to my Canon A590IS. I had a fun day taking pictures emphasizing the distortion, as well as landscapes widening up the perspective. It's a great way to add some creative license to your pictures without breaking the bank. If you've been thinking about a fisheye lens, this is a great way to experiment before you buy a more expensive one. I attached to a point a shoot, so your mileage may vary, but it's worth a try.

Here are some comparative shots taken with a Canon Vixia HFS 200 camcorder, without the lens, with lens and macro, and with lens but not macro. Notice in the final very wide shot (the true .45x) there is some fisheye distortion and a bit of shading around the edges. However, the increase in angle of capture is so dramatic that the effect is worth it. Consider the distortion as part of the effect.

I give it 2 stars because the price is about right. If you want to do real nice wide angle shots, you may want to spend more cash and get the right gear. But if you just want to shoot around and you are beginning, then it's ok.

DO NOT USE FLASH WITH THIS, it leaves a nasty shadow on the corners and bottom of the picture.

For the price, it's a pretty good buy, and I gave it 4 stars based on performance for the price rather than overall quality. I placed it on the front of my Tamron 28-70, shot a few images and it performed well bringing it out to a little over 12mm. But, be warned, it is noticeably soft at the edges (haven't really looked too hard for other distortions yet). And, when I put it on my Nikon 18-105, there was significant vignetting at the wide end till about 24mm. Overall though, it's a nice little accessory and I plan on having fun with it, and for the price, it is really hard to beat.

Update - I think I found a way to get better results with this converter. Instead of using it on my Nikon 18-105 lens with 67mm threads, I attached it to my 18-55 kit lens via a 52-67mm step up ring. I didn't see the vignetting I saw on the wider lens, and based on what I saw on the LCD, the drop off in sharpness at the edges is not quite as noticeable (need to actually upload it to check it out further).

I wish they made a 77mm version of this. I would like to try the same approach with a step up ring on my 67mm lenses.

Update 2 - Well, tried it on the 52mm thread and reviewed the results. Didn't have the edge-to-edge sharpness I hoped for. But, what can you expect for the price?

Distortion was significant when used on EF-S 18-55 mm kit lens. It blocks FOV at wide angle. Does not add any useful wide-angle capabilities to the kit lens.

NOTE: I posted photos taken with this wide angle lens and a Canon S5 at the photo link near the top of the page. You can look at the photos and form your own opinion how the quality of the lens, when used with the S5.

I'm guessing that different vendors are shipping different versions of this wide angle lens adapter. I've seen what appears to be this EXACT lens adapter sold under several brand names.

The version that was sent to me by vendor "DavisMax" is the "Digital Concepts by Sakar" 0.45x "Professional Wide Angle Lens With Macro". It came with a nice soft case, a threaded rear cover, and a press-on front lens cover.

I am using it with the Canon S5, which has a built-in zoom lens that begins at the equivalent of 36mm, which is a moderate wide angle, compared to the wider view 28mm and 24mm wide zoom lenses supplied with most 2011 "Super Zoom" cameras.

The Canon's auto exposure and auto focus works perfectly. The converter provides outdoor photos with the exact same contrast and saturation of my Canon lens. There is a very slight loss of sharpness in the center of a photo, and a moderate loss of sharpness in the corners.

The loss of sharpness is not likely to be noticed by someone viewing an 8 x 10 enlargment from two or three fee away...at a normal viewing distance.

AND, with the Canon S5, there is NO vignetting in the corners of photos...the corners of the photos don't get the darkening effect that some reviewers got with their particular lens combination. I suspect the adapter works best with lenses that are in the equivalent of the 35mm to 40mm range and that vignetting will occur if it is used with the equivalent of a 28mm or 24mm lense.

The BAD news. The lens adapter did not work well indoors. Straight lines are bowed, and the Canon's built-in flash leaves a shadow on the bottom center of each photo. This is an outdoors landscape lens, not an indoor lens.
