Product Description

The Mini Griptilian features textured Handle Scales (which are very strong and very lightweight). Double 410 stainless liners add strength to the knife handle. The blade is 154-CM stainless (plain) with satin finish and ambidextrous round thumb-hole opener. The pocket clip can be reversed for right or left handed people. The AXIS lock system makes the knife easy to open and easy to close (it operates identically for right and left handers). Benchmade is proud to donate a portion of the profits from the sale of this knife to the Oregon Health and Science University Breast Cancer Institute in Portland, Oregon to benefit their Breast Health Education Program. This program provides medical students, residents and practicing clinicians with standardized training to enhance their ability to detect palpable breast cancer in its earliest form

Great knife, very solid, and very sharp.

The lock is really fun to play with, and being able to swing the knife open and close with one hand is a joy.

Could have been a little sharper out of the box but easy to sharpen and holds and edge well.

I am a 34 year old male with a job history to include, US Army Paratrooper, USFS Wildland Firefighter, State Trooper, and (currently) a Firefighter/Paramedic. To say that I have used and owned many, many knives is an understatement. I own the Benchmade Mini-Griptillian combo edge OD green. This is the perfect knife for everyday carry. I use it at work, while hiking, climbing, canyoneering, biking, whatever. I even suprised my wife the other night as I was sitting in the living room with my p.j.s on and she couldn't open a package, so I pulled out this knife out of my p.j's and opened the package for her. She busted up laughing (and of course called me a dork). I told her that I had heard an old eskimo saying that "The best knife in the world is the one you have with you." I believe this and practice it too. The mini Griptillian is the perfect size to carry everywhere, yet can get just about any job done. It is extremely sharp from the factory, holds an edge for a long time, the action is very precise, and it just feels good in the hand. I highly recommend this knife for, well, just about anyone. Well, anyone who can appriciate the highest quality standards and the absolute best workable knife money can buy anyway.. enjoy!

Note: This review was once posted on a different Benchmade 556 listing, however, that listing has since been deactivated. I write reviews to inform others, this is why the review has been moved.

This review is for the Benchmade Model 556 Mini Griptilian with thumb studs, a black handle, a plain edge (non serrated), and 154CM blade steel.

The Blade
The blade has a great modified drop-point shape to it. Towards the tip of the knife there is just enough belly for just about any EDC (Every Day Carry) task. The blade is easily opened with the thumb studs, the provide nice traction and are situated in the correct area for easy deployment. The stone washed blade makes the blade look similar to having many small scratched on it. However, this looks nicer than I am able to describe it. This finishing is also nice for when you use your knife and it does eventually get scratched up, as the scratches are difficult to distinguish from the original blade finish. My largest gripe with this knife is it's edge. This edge is quite fat, it is around 70º inclusive geometry. This makes the edge last awhile, but cutting through thick and coarse materials becomes a pain. For example, cutting through thick card board can be difficult, but anything relatively thin is a breeze due to the sharpness.

The Steel
This steel (154CM) is some good stuff. This steel is pretty easy to sharpen and holds it's edge for quite awhile. My only gripe with the steel is that it tends to be a bit grainy. Grainy as in the grains in the steel are large and more noticeable than some other steels that I have used. AUS-8, VG-10, S30V, and 8Cr13MoV to mention a few.

This is my first experience with Benchmade. I am a huge fan of Spyderco but recently decided to branch out and try different brands. I originally heavily considered the full size griptilian but decided to go with the mini because of the 3" knife laws. In terms of the Axis lock and the blade steel, I like it. The lock is really fun to play with, and being able to swing the knife open and close with one hand is a joy. The 154cm steel also holds a sharp edge and shouldn't be too hard to sharpen. My mini grip didn't come super hair shaving sharp out of the box like all my Spyderco knives but it was still better than my kershaw / cold steel knives brand new.

Honestly my only main gripe is how the knife feels in hand. It's not bad, but not comfortable for me. Keep in my mind this is just my opinion. I have a Spyderco Dragonfly 2 and although the knife is smaller overall, it has a finger choil which is very comfy to hold and that lengthens the handle to nearly the same size as the mini grip. The jimping on the liners of the mini grip where you place your index finger are rough and my finger started to get sore after using the knife for a long time. I think the texture of the handle is decent and you should be able to get a good hold on it (I also don't think the material feels cheap like many say) but it just doesn't feel super comfortable in my hand.

Overall I think it's still a good knife. I might buy a full size griptilian and see if that feels any better in hand.

Purchased as a gift for hubby. This is his favorite knife and he carries it daily. The knife is well made and operates very smooth.

I've been a Spyderco guy for years, but when my latest Endura tip broke off, I figured I'd try something new. I knew Benchmade produced a great knife, so I took a chance. Getting used to the AXIS lock wasn't hard whatsoever and knife fits well in the hand. The blade retains its edge well and sharpening's cake by stone or belt. Overall, this mini-Griptilian's noticeably better than any of the comparable Spydercos. Glad I switched.

I am not going to leave a long wordy review, because this has been done to death on this knife. Simply if you don't own one, buy one, it is popular for a reason. Great size, great blade at a reasonable price.
