This is the best knife I have ever owned.
    Robert L. Schust Jr
Nice little pocket knife that is light and has a blade from great steel and holds it's shape well (razor sharp and even angles on the edge).

Love the axis lock system and how easily the knife can be opened and closed with one hand.

I am a 34 year old male with a job history to include, US Army Paratrooper, USFS Wildland Firefighter, State Trooper, and (currently) a Firefighter/Paramedic. To say that I have used and owned many, many knives is an understatement. I own the Benchmade Mini-Griptillian combo edge OD green. This is the perfect knife for everyday carry. I use it at work, while hiking, climbing, canyoneering, biking, whatever. I even suprised my wife the other night as I was sitting in the living room with my p.j.s on and she couldn't open a package, so I pulled out this knife out of my p.j's and opened the package for her. She busted up laughing (and of course called me a dork). I told her that I had heard an old eskimo saying that "The best knife in the world is the one you have with you." I believe this and practice it too. The mini Griptillian is the perfect size to carry everywhere, yet can get just about any job done. It is extremely sharp from the factory, holds an edge for a long time, the action is very precise, and it just feels good in the hand. I highly recommend this knife for, well, just about anyone. Well, anyone who can appriciate the highest quality standards and the absolute best workable knife money can buy anyway.. enjoy!

Note: This review was once posted on a different Benchmade 556 listing, however, that listing has since been deactivated. I write reviews to inform others, this is why the review has been moved.

This review is for the Benchmade Model 556 Mini Griptilian with thumb studs, a black handle, a plain edge (non serrated), and 154CM blade steel.

    The Blade
The blade has a great modified drop-point shape to it. Towards the tip of the knife there is just enough belly for just about any EDC (Every Day Carry) task. The blade is easily opened with the thumb studs, the provide nice traction and are situated in the correct area for easy deployment. The stone washed blade makes the blade look similar to having many small scratched on it. However, this looks nicer than I am able to describe it. This finishing is also nice for when you use your knife and it does eventually get scratched up, as the scratches are difficult to distinguish from the original blade finish. My largest gripe with this knife is it's edge. This edge is quite fat, it is around 70º inclusive geometry. This makes the edge last awhile, but cutting through thick and coarse materials becomes a pain. For example, cutting through thick card board can be difficult, but anything relatively thin is a breeze due to the sharpness.

    The Steel
This steel (154CM) is some good stuff. This steel is pretty easy to sharpen and holds it's edge for quite awhile. My only gripe with the steel is that it tends to be a bit grainy. Grainy as in the grains in the steel are large and more noticeable than some other steels that I have used. AUS-8, VG-10, S30V, and 8Cr13MoV to mention a few.

Short Form: There is a very Zen aesthetic to doing something very ordinary and doing it spectacularly well. There is an equally Zen experience of appreciating such mastery only through time and exposure. I think the Mini-Grip really hits on both of those things. While it leans slightly more towards the "hard use" end of the pool, the Mini-Grip comes close to being a perfectly balanced EDC knife. If you're going to exceed the $50.00 range with one knife, I would recommend that it be this knife.

Size: Smallish end of medium, with a total length of 6.78" and a closed length of a very impressive 3.87". The blade hits just shy of 3" with almost the entire exposed edge being sharpened and usable.

Usage Rating: Medium going on heavy. The only reason I don't say "heavy" without reservation is because it is, on the whole, rather smallish. Other than that, this is a knife with dual steel liners, an insanely strong lock, and a moderately thick blade-stock which is ground in such a way that it can take abuse. More to the point, the texturing and gripping created by the handle make this a blade that wouldn't slip out of our hands, even if you used it to cape a deer or clean a really slimy fish, like a catfish.

Steel Quality: I almost put this in the "high" category. 154 CM is a slippery fish in that way. It is certainly an order of magnitude better than 8Cr13Mov and lower steels. I'm not sure I'd call it "better" than VG-10, although it does have better wear resistance. It is not as easy to sharpen as VG-10, and while it will take a hair-popping edge, it won't easily get to that "scalpel zone" that VG-10 and Sandvik 14c28n will.

Purchased as a gift for hubby. This is his favorite knife and he carries it daily. The knife is well made and operates very smooth.

I am not going to leave a long wordy review, because this has been done to death on this knife. Simply if you don't own one, buy one, it is popular for a reason. Great size, great blade at a reasonable price.
