Editorial Reviews

The Indianapolis Star

Joe Dickstein, VP of acquisitions at Mainline Releasing, says '587' is, "terriffic family entertainment."

Product Description

On the day of The Big Race, Alex and his friends line their homemade soapbox racers up at the top of the steepest and longest hill in the neighborhood. With his sister Molly watching from the sidelines, the checkered flag waves and the race is on.

After a slow start, Alex deploys his secret fifth wheel and accelerates from last place to the head of the pack. But the incredible speed gained is countered by complete loss of control as he rushes headlong into Deadman's Curve and crashes through an old wooden fence.

After the dust settles, Alex discovers a fully-functional steam locomotive, "The 587" - destined for the scrap heap. He and his sister Molly devise a plan to rescue the antique engine with the help of an old engineer, Russell, his dog, Sparky, and about every kid in the neighborhood. Thus begins their awesome adventure, "587: The Great Train Robbery."

5.0 out of 5 stars Review by a Cast-Member, October 31, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: 587: The Great Train Robbery (DVD)
Although I'm sure many readers will be skeptical about this fact, I did indeed play the part of Molly in the movie, "587: The Great Train Robbery." I am now 13 (almost 14) years old, and although I never regarded my performance in the movie as stellar, I believe that "587" was a quality kid's film for what a small budget we had. Dan Hall made it for his son, who loved trains, and I think that any kid would be able to enjoy the magic of a film created not for profit, but out of love. I think all kids should be able to enjoy the light-hearted story and the cute jokes. I'm happy to say that I'm a much better actress now than I was when I was seven...I now attend Interlochen Arts Academy as a theatre major. The movie was fun to make, despite those 4 o'clock shooting-calls, and I truly believe that all families will enjoy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kids will love it!, January 29, 2007
This review is from: 587: The Great Train Robbery (DVD)
As mentioned in the negative reviews, the writing is only so-so and the acting is terrible (the child actors are better than the adults), but don't write this film off. It's good family fun. My six year old nephew loves it. He watched three times within 24 hours of receiving it. He laughed at every joke and was on the edge of his seat for the last half of the movie. What this movie lacks in talent, it makes up for in heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taylor's review, February 11, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: 587: The Great Train Robbery [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I think Dan Hall's movie is super! I am seven and have watched this movie more than 10 times. I like that it is funny. It is good. I like it a lot! It is kind of like an adventure and makes me laugh a lot! Every time I watch this movie I laughed at the part where the steam came out of the train and was in the girl's face. It is the best movie I ever saw
