This British group is pretty amazing and I am shocked that I am the first person to review this??? That is surprising: Pitchfork gave this album a good review and they are currently touring with A Place To Bury Strangers? There a few aspects of this band that make them stand out. First: the ethereal, beautiful vocals of lead singer Sian Alice Ahern (no relation to the former Irish PM). Second: the wide range of sounds and influences here and the way in which they are coherently and carefully melded into a unique variety of indie rock that varies from wall of sound to complete sparseness. Pitchfork compared them to 90s bands like Stereolab, Laika, Th' Faith Healers, and Pram. These are fair comparisons, especially a genre-bending band like Stereolab. I would also say they is a fair bit of influence from PJ Harvey, Fairport Convention, Slowdive, Pentangle, My Bloody Valentine, etc. The songs are influenced by jazz, krautrock, shoegaze, post-punk, etc, etc. Not sure what else to say, just go listen to the songs on the myspace and give 'em a shot!!! |
