Book Description

It isn't until Donald Roth meets his son's future in-laws that he realizes he is tired of a three-speed life. Time to move up.

When Donald was a kid in the late 60's on the South Side of Chicago, he had a Schwinn Sting Ray bike. Everyone did. But everyone else had a five-speed. Donald's was a three-speed. It was good enough, as was explained by his parents, just as their Ford Maverick wasn't the neighbor's Le Mans, but it was good enough. And that's the way Donald was taught to live his life. It was a three-speed life. It was good enough.

He marries Emily because she's good enough. Emily marries Donald because that's what she had planned, and she is not going to experience divorce as did her parents. Donald opens a law practice with his two best friends and roommates from college because it's good enough.

Then the Roths meet their son's future in-laws and everything changes.

Donald wonders if, in fact, he could get that five-speed.

In this hilarious and thought-provoking novel, the whole concept of morals and convention is turned inside out. Everything is perception. If you like Richard Russo, Tom Perotta, and Jonathan Franzen, you're going to love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful character development September 25, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One of the most entertaining books I have read in a long while. Its magic laid for me in the depth of the characters, and their emotional journeys through interactions and relationships. Essentially this is a book about the coming of age of somewhat surprisingly several - adults. These interesting characters (pun intended) stayed with me even after finishing the book. I look forward to the sequel to know what else these well-depicted humans face and how they walk through it. The characters could be anyone you or I know in our seemingly mundane, uninteresting lives. This made the book hard to put down because I wanted to know what would happen next. The intricacies of the webs that we weave in our lives were so well addressed that it makes one wonder what the author has known in his life.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5five Speed May 15, 2011
By sabsmom
Charley has captured the essence of living in Chicago in the 1960's on the south side. He has brillantly mixed romance, a little suspense, some mystery, etc. into a fun book to read. The story kept me guessing throughout the book. I truly enjoyed the book. It is a great summer read by the pool or at the beach.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smart and Entertaining June 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
While the overall plot may be not be totally unpredictable, it's actually the more subtle plot twists accompanied by the witty humor that make the story work. All in all, an enjoyable read with some food for thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars My wife did not enjoy me laughing so much. October 5, 2012
By Brian
Format:Kindle Edition
I finished last night. From the opening scene to the close this is a tremendously funny, thought provoking book. And if you've ever been married or are married now, are you one of the four main characters? I know which one I am and I'm not telling.

I laughed so much at the closing few scenes I almost got hit by my wife.

Kol Ha Kavod Charley, but one thing, where did you steal the name of Donald's dishonest client from? I just can't figure out why his name sounds so familiar!

5.0 out of 5 stars So Funny, So Great! August 15, 2011
By Dregs
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a great book. Yes OK its at heart a romantic comedy, but there's nothing cheesy about it. It is also quite funny! It caught my eye because I have a 5 speed schwinn as a kid, but that's not what made me keep reading.

Had trouble keep my attention. Kept falling asleep or day dreaming. Just not what I enjoy in a book. Sorry but that's my thoughts on it.

This book is a comedy or love and impossible coincidence. It could use some editing, but overall it is a pleasant rom com, hard to put down and sure to leave a smile on your face.
