5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing instrumentals
This is absolutely one of the best instrumental albums I've ever heard. A very raw funk sound that I never, never get tired of listening to. It's unfortunate that this band is no longer together, but fans of this will also enjoy 5ive Style guitar player Bill Dolan's new band "Heroic Doses."

5.0 out of 5 stars 5ive Style (self-titled), June 2, 2006
This review is from: 5ive Style (Audio CD)
The only thing wrong with this CD is that it is too short. 5ive style are GENIUS musicans who play intelligent, instrumental funky music with heart. Every single track is outstanding - the musicianship is stunningly accomplished, yet the band never sounds like they are showing off. They come so much closer to an updated Meters sort of sound than dozens of other bands who are trying really hard to do the same thing (e.g., Galactic). 5ive Style makes it sound easy! And what great guitar sounds these guys get! I'd love to know what equipment they are using & require all guitarists to but the same rig. I listen to this CD frequently, and I've owned it for about 10 years. There are not too many recordings I can say that about!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing band, amazing album., July 6, 1998

5IVE STYLE is an excellent Chicago-based instrumental indie band on the funk-disco tip. Members of 5IVE STYLE also play in other great indie bands THE SEA & CAKE and TORTOISE. This particular SubPop release is the only 5IVE STYLE album which is easy to find, and I highly recommend owning it, as well as any of the earlier pre-SubPop releases you might be fortunate enough to find. A superb live band, as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who needs a singer, anyway?, June 26, 1998

This review is from: 5ive Style (Audio CD)
Unbelieveably cool, 4 piece, instrumental funk/indie rock band that brings the 70s genre into the 90s college arena. 5ive Style features nasty guitar riffs backed up by one of the funkiest rhythm sections since The Meters. The disc has a great raw, live sound that doesn't reek of the overproduction that plagues many other modern "funk" artists (whoops, did I say Prince?). This album has yet to collect a speck of dust in the two years I've owned it (remarkable since the CD is barely over 30 minutes long). If you like instrumental funk, or funk music in general, this album will keep your head bobbing for a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars These other guys don't know what they are talking about, January 18, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: 5ive Style (Audio CD)
Well, after reading these other reviews, all I can say is the world in 2001 is a place of many varied tastes, as always. I think that 5ive style is very good, well made musician's music that is fun and funky, and cerebral, too, with little bits of production enhancements cleverly lurking behind very easily likeable jam tunes. The rhthym is very funky, but only complimentary to the standout instrument, the guitar. The guitar style is almost bluesy, it is not impossible to imitate, it just holds the song and moves it in a very jangly, funky direction. That's I guess the best way I can describe it. I think they are a great band, at least on the debut, but it depends on what you're in to. If you like R&B like "five" or the pop princesses and princes that are popular nowadays, you definitely won't like this.

This review is from: 5ive Style (Audio CD)
This is an older CD, but I've long regarded it as the ultimate music disc, which I play at most every party Ive been to since purchasing this fine peice of harmonic divergence. I've never seen them live, but I'd love to. Some day...

5.0 out of 5 stars These white boy indie funk-rockers from Chi-town rule, September 20, 1999

Saw 'em live in '96 with The Sea and Cake. Amazing performance considering it was an impromptu show at Borders Books & Music in Beechwood, Ohio. Can't wait to see them again. Buy their two seven inches from '95 at all costs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Concert, Terrible band, October 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 5ive Style (Audio CD)
With the first sample of this cd, I though this group showed potential. Upon purchase though, I discovered the band wasn't as good as I had anticipated. Never-the-less, I decided to give them a second chance, and was fortunate enough to see them in concert. This was not a good idea. The band was late, and very off tune. Never again shall I spend money on anything of 5ive Style origin.

I can only think of one band with a a 5 in it. That's 5ive. This is terrible. I can't say anymore. Can I give it 0 stars?
