I am the commander of a German Mountain Reenactor group and this book is required reading. We actually do the 95th Recon Bn from the book. It is an excellent source for beginners or the veteran and a must for any German Mountain enthusiast. Much information for little money.

Format: Paperback
5th GJ Division was a model GJ unit of that time, incorporating both 'old-type' 100 GJ Regiment and newer-type units consisting of both Germans and Austrians. The whole Division performed well in their given tasks, both in Greece/Crete, or Northern Front in Russia, or during Italian campaign 1944/45.

This book is full of interesting info on that specific unit and German GJ in general. The part I found especially interesting are the facts about operations not so popular in the literature, like fighting in the Alps in 1945 or abandoned Felix Operation (Gibraltar). Concise, yet packed with interesting details not usually met anywhere else.

Highly recommended.

Format: Paperback
The book spends WAY too much time discussing campaigns the 5th fought in (Crete, Leningrad, Greece, etc.) and not enough time discussing the unit itself. It seems like a safe bet that anyone interested in the 5th Gebirgsjager would ALREADY know the background behind the situation in Crete, would already know that Leningrad was placed under siege by both the Finns and the Germans and would already know that the Germans invaded Greece during WWII. Instead, there is excruciating detail on these campaigns... to include the decision-making regarding whether or not to take Moscow in 1941.

On the other hand, the book also includes some information on the contingency plan to invade Luxemburg and the earmarking of the 5th Gebirgsjager Division to take part in it. And there are a lot of first-rate photos (including some from Signal) which do the topic justice.
