Effective bosses becoming an increasing need,
By Dianne Walker "Dianne W- HR Mgr - Freelance W... (Virginia, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 6 Habits of Highly Effective Bosses (Paperback)
Leadership is becoming increasingly important in organizations. High employee turnover, increased human resource issues, financial problems and customer service issues are just some of the issues that are affected by poor management.
6 Habits of Highly Effective Bosses discusses the skills necessary in order to improve leadership within an organization and improve the overall bottom line for customers and company stakeholders. The book begins by discussing the warning signs that companies should look for in order to determine if poor management exists. The book then discusses 6 habits that bosses should possess in order to be effective. For example, habit 4 discusses setting proper boundaries. Often supervisors, have a hard time defining the boundaries between themselves and their employees. This lack of boundaries can result in a lack of respect for the bosses authority. 6 Habits of Highly Effective Bosses discusses how to set and maintain boundaries. While the book does have a very similar style to books by Stephen Covey, I do feel that the information contained within the book is essential knowledge to any manager/supervisor looking to improve their effectiveness.

By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews

Why do people work hard for one boss and want to quit on another? Quite often it's the boss' management style which is the problem - that, and different habits which may actually work against productivity. There are six habits of human relations which the authors have identified as habits used by bosses everyone admires. Models of exceptional supervisory skills are presented for any interested in honing better leadership skills.

This book serves as a "least you need to know" for new managers and a refresher course for those with years of experience in a leadership position, specifically when it comes to creating and mainting solid relationships with your employees. As the authors note, "People don't leave their jobs, they leave their managers." So often, people are put in leadership positions and give little thought to the responsibility that comes with it. The six habits defined in this book provide an interesting outlook on ways to empower your team so that they can achieve ultimate success and thoroughly enjoy working under you.
I specifically enjoyed the "Practicing Empathy" and "Critizing Artfully" habits. While the authors do not provide an abundance of techniques, they do present words of wisdom that will surely enlighten you, assuming you are open to learning new habits.

This title is a bit suspected of getting the benefits from the similar one: 7 habits of Highly Effective People. But it's really a good book for all the managers. A must!
