Like Sitting Down With Old Friends,

This review is from: 6 Rainier Drive (Cedar Cove, Book 6) (Mass Market Paperback)
As with the previous 5 books in Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove Series, 6 Ranier Drive was like sitting down and gossiping with old friends. Ms. Macomber has stayed true to the flavor of the series by resolving problems from the previous book while setting up new scenerios for future books. In 6 Ranier Drive, Justine and Seth's marriage becomes troubled over the restaurant burning; Anson Butler and Allison Cox's relationship is threatened by Anson's past; Teri Miller becomes involved with a celebrity; Cal Washburn finds a cure for his speech defect, but has romantic difficulties, and Jon and Maryellen have their baby after a complicated pregnancy. I hate to say that Cedar Cove is like a soap opera on paper, but don't quite know how else to describe the series. I think the major difference between your daytime soaps and Cedar Cove is the rather excellent writing talent that Ms. Macomber brings to the table. After the first two books in the series (read them in order), you can't help but become so involved with the characters! While some of the books were 5 star reads, I would rate 6 Ranier Drive as 4 stars, because while it held my interest, it didn't cause me the deeply emotional response that some of the others did - specifically the 4th and 5th books. Regardless, 6 Ranier Drive was a worthy addition to the series and I will look forward eagerly to 74 Seaside Avenue in September of 2007.

I have absolutely loved this series. It has been wonderful, light reading and I have looked forward to each installment. I sat down with this book expecting to be delighted and just wasn't.
There were too many characters and too many story lines without any in-depth look at any single group of characters. Fortunately, I knew the characters from previous novels because they were so one-dimensional here. Justine was irritating, Seth was bull-headed, Linette was immature and childish, and I could go on and on. Nothing new was revealed about the characters and, in many cases, the characters seemed to revert back to what they would have been like at the age of 8. The characters were grating ! I particularly had difficulty with the women in the story insisting that the men in their lives accept dishonesty and abuse from family members just because they are "family". Both Charlotte and Maryellen expect their husbands to love, embrace and forgive family members regardless of the atrocities of the past. They spend much of the book being "disappointed" in their spouses for not caring about their family when their families have done some really terrible things. The women just came across as annoying. I am planning on reading the next installment, but it needs to be significantly better than this one or I am finished with this series !

This series is my first experience with Debbie Macomber. While the first five were fast, enjoyable reads, this one just wasn't as good. As a previous reviewer stated, the characters weren't too developed and the storyline seemed very lukewarm. I'm hoping to enjoy the old writing style in 74 Seaside Avenue.

Not a very good installment,

This one wasn't as good as the other five books. There were way too many charactors in this one and it made difficult to remember who they were and what their current storyline was. The list in the beginning of the book wasn't much help. I was looking forward to Seth and Justine's story but was disappointed they themselves made it hard for me to root for them. Seth was bull-headed and not listening at all to his wife. Justine was very childish I expected her to be at least a little worried at the sole income for her family being gone. How am I suppose to root for a woman who's first impulse with her marriage problems is to have lunch with her ex-boyfriend? I found myself siding with Ben and Jon instead of their wives who were pushing them to reconcoil with their families. Ben's son had previously tried to con Charlotte out of a large sum of money and yet she's trying to convince Ben to forgive his son? The same goes for Jon, his family left him to rot in jail for years and he's suppose to simply forgive them? I was surprise that Linette's romanced ended the way it did and can't wait to see what comes her way. Teri met a man and the relationship progressed very fast but it was real nice. Allison Cox was wonderful I liked how she had faith that her boyfriend didn't start the fire at the restaurant even when evidence suggested otherwise.

I've been a fan of Debbie Macomber since I was a teenager and now I'm in my thirties. This particular series is one of the best I've read. I highly recommend them as the plot is intriging as well as a little romance in each one. The series in each book gives updates on the past characters as well.

I have been wanting to read this book for the longest time and finally read it.
Overall, Ms. Macomber did not disappoint me. I like the new character - Bobby Polgar, the grandmaster chess player. The mystery of The Lighthouse Restaurant fire was resolved nicely. One thing preventing me from giving this book a 5* is the twist in the romance between Cal Washburn and Linnette. I know that Linnette is a bit childish and had hoped from 50 Harbor Street that Cal would be a good influence on her. It did not turn out to be the case. I am disappointed in Cal. The twist is really out of the left field and un-neccessary. For a man with deep character like Cal, he sure changed his mind fast. Otherwise, this is a solid read. Can't wait for the next one.

Enjoyable Series About Old Friends Continues In True Soap Opera Fashion,

This review is from: 6 Rainier Drive (Cedar Cove, Book 6) (Mass Market Paperback)
Debbie Macomber continues the heartwarming and endearing stories about a fictional town in Washington State and the people whose lives are the fodder for this soap opera-like series.
The focus in this sixth entry is the home of Justine and Seth Gunderson. Their popular restaurant, The Lighthouse, has burned to the ground and finding the arsonist responsible becomes the focal point of their lives. A couple of red herrings are thrown in before the true culprit is revealed, though I saw this one coming very early in the book. Seth's career change and Justine's alliance with a former boyfriend cause friction in the marriage before resolutions are reached. Also having problems are Maryellen and Jon Bowman. Maryellen's troubled pregnancy demands that old grudges are put aside and help is accepted from estranged parents. Lynette McAfee finds love and loses it just as quickly. How she handles a broken heart is a bit childish and if this character leaves town as promised, nothing will be lost. Her much more interesting parents, Roy and Corrie, are lamentably absent for the most part and I would have loved to have seen Lynette confiding in her mother and Corrie advising her impetuous daughter. Unfortunately, Lynette's character comes up remarkably short in the maturity division. Old friends from past books are, of course, present. We are able to keep in step with Olivia, Jack, Charlotte, Ben, Allison, Cecelia, Cliff, Grace, Anson, Rachel and all the characters we have come to regard as friends. But it is beautician Teri Miller who provides the cliff-hanger at novel's end. Her life takes a major change when she is unexplainably drawn to geeky chess player Bobby Polgar. An offer to cut his hair contributes to big changes in his chess play and even bigger changes for the outgoing stylist. A bizarre threat to Teri sets the stage for the next book in the series, 74 SEASIDE AVENUE. I can't wait till September, 2007, to catch up with all the gang.

This book in the series was my least favorite so far. I'm not sure if it was lacking in substance or I if I'm just getting bored with this series.
It was just an ok read and I will continue with the series since I am curious about all of the characters. Hang in there with me!! Come on Debbie M ~~ perk it up a little!

Extremely disappointed in this latest Cedar Cove release...,
This review is from: 6 Rainier Drive (Cedar Cove, Book 6) (Mass Market Paperback)
I had such anticipation for this latest book from the Cedar Cove series....I was VERY disappointed, so much so that I didn't finish the book which is extremely rare for me. I love Debbie Macomber as an author. However, this book spends most of its time split among a huge cast of characters (from previous books...rehashing them into the story).
I love series and I even like to have earlier characters brought into the story of the current book. However, in this case, it is too much and dilutes the storyline terribly. Just as you are getting warmed up about a couple, it switches to another storyline....very frustrating.... I don't often write reviews...except when I am terribly disappointed. Truly, wait and order this used or even get it at your local library.... I look forward to Debbie Macomber's next book as she is a great author....this one was off the mark though... |
