Excellent resource for trails in DFW,
By
This review is from: 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Dallas, Fort Worth: Includes Tarrant, Collin and Denton Counties (Paperback)
I read the previous review, and have to disagree 100%. I own this book and have hiked most of the trails in it. It is an excellent resource - the trail descriptions are accurate and very detailed, and directions to the trailhead are explicit. I did see that two of the trails were mislabeled on the inside jacket (Lake Lavon mentioned in above review) - but that seems a minor point considering you'll probably only use the map on the inside jacket briefly, and really refer to the trail descriptions themselves. If you read about each trail, it tells you exactly where the trail is located, and it is accurate. Lots of great pictures too throughout the book to give you an idea of what's out there. I haven't found a better resource yet for hiking DFW. A great resource for trails here.

One of the best resources for hiking in the DFW area,

This book provides large number of hikes in the DFW area. Each hike is backed up by trail route maps, brief and detailed descriptions of the trail, (useful) elevation profile of the hike, historical notes of the trail (if any) and places of interest near the hike. The hiking descriptions for the most part are accurate. Ofcourse, trail conditions/routes could change anytime; its the hikers responsibility to be aware of the surroundings and navigate safely. This book is just a guide.
I found this book to be exhaustive and very informative. I have used this book as a reference when hiking many trails in the area. This book also categorizes the hikes into trails for runners, sorts trails based on mileage etc. I found this classification to be very helpful. Also, I have found some out-of-town people to assume that the DFW area lacks good hiking trails. This book definitely trumps this assumption. Highly recommended!

This book is a serious disappointment. As a longtime DFW resident and avid hiker/jogger, it is immediately apparent upon browsing this work that it contains serious geographical errors. Numerical markings on the map inside the book's cover do not correspond with the correct trails in the book. For example, the location of Trail 40, one of the beautiful Lake Ray Roberts trails described in the book, is positioned on the wrong lake, Lake Lavon, on both the main map, inside the cover, and on the detailed chapter map. This is just one example of at least five mislabled map points throughout the book.
In short, should a newcomer to the area try to use this book as a guide to local hiking destinations, he or she would likely end up lost or at another trail altogether. This could be dangerous, as one should always be aware of details such as distance, trail conditions, and possible admission fees before setting out on a hike. This book is a poorly edited, frustrating purchase.

This book provides many great trails to hike in DFW, many of which would be difficult to find on your own. Some of the travels are much more extensive than the route described in the book so we find it best to take a copy of the map on the trail with us otherwise a 4 mile hike could turn into 10 miles.

This has been a good resource for me finding me great hikes, 1 very close to where I live (Rowlett Creek Nature Trail) that I didn't know was there. I've been on several others in the area, and plan on doing many more if not all as time goes on. Plenty of EZ hikes for the novice and a few longer ones for the more seaoned hikers out there. 1 comment about the Lake Lavon Trinity Trails hike. Although mislabled, it should not be an issue to anyone who is familiar with the general DFW area. However should add an update to it, at the time of this books writing Lake Lavon was probably 10 or 15 feet lower. In the last couple of years of very good rainfall in the area, part of the trail (the return along the shore of the lake) in the hike has disappeared and is now under water. It is just an out and back now, the trail itself just in that section does go out about 15 miles, so you can still do a pretty challenging out and back if you wish.
Back to the book, this is organized nicely with the exception of the few misprints all transpositions between Lake Ray Roberts and Lake Lavon that I can see, it is a great book with lots of good info on the trails and also what time of year and what type of hike it is. I look forward to doing more. Wish they had a 100 best in 100 miles version because I am sure with the wide open spaces of Texas there is even more out there.

This looks like a book with many interesting hikes in the area. But, I've not taken any of them yet due to the heat. Come fall I'll be raring to go!
