5.0 out of 5 stars wonders of nature, November 5, 2004
This review is from: 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: San Diego: Including North, South, and East Counties (Paperback)
The author of this guide has put together a sensory smorgasbord for anyone who loves the outdoors. She details the flowers and plants you'll see (no more do you have to wonder what that fuzzy gray-green plant is, she tells you!), birds and other wildlife, challenges of the terrain, and where to find a spectacular view. Cross-referenced lists help you choose which hike to do (or helps you prioritize--I want to do all of them!) Best of all, she covers the damage from the 2003 wildfires around San Diego, so the book is way ahead of other guides right now. This guide took this New Englander from "Man, southern California is so dry" to amazement at the variety the San Diego area has to offer, from coastline to forest to mountains.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most upt-to-date guidebook - wonderful descriptions!, February 27, 2005
This review is from: 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: San Diego: Including North, South, and East Counties (Paperback)
Sheri McGregor's book is wonderful. I picked up a copy after seeing her on local TV and am very glad I did. This book's unique among hiking books. It not only gives great description of trails and information about how easy or strenuous each trail is, but Ms. McGregor goes beyond that and points out so many local native plants, wildlife, with interesting information about them. She writes in such descriptive, vivid language, I feel like I am reliving the experience when I go back and re-read about the hike.

One of the best features about this guide is it is so up to date. So much has chenged since the horrible 2003 wildfires. This book has those changes. I am thrilled to see (finally) an up-to-date hiking guidebook for San Diego.

2.0 out of 5 stars Vague Directions Mar an Otherwise Good Guidebook, January 21, 2007
By
This review is from: 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: San Diego: Including North, South, and East Counties (Paperback)
This guidebook has an excellent selection of hikes and reasonably good background information. The problem area is that the directions to trailheads are vague, and to a certain extent the routefinding on the trails are vague too. I have tried four of the hikes so far, and in two cases have found myself driving around with navigational issues. This stems from (a) the fact that the directions assume that the driver will always be heading directly from downtown San Diego and (b) that there are anyway, some mistakes. The miniature maps that show the trailhead positions are greatly simplified and not to scale, and for some reason there is not a map in the book which shows North at the top of the page. They are all West-up! Why on Earth would anyone do that? If you have a GPS - don't bother trying to use it. There is not enough information to program it.

Having said all that, there are some good trails for the persistent. If Ms McGregor were to consider updating it, I would strongly recommend: (a) better trailhead locator maps; (b) more detailed trail maps; (c) North Up (d) GPS location information (e) some photographs - at least one per trail would be welcome.
