Product Description

The natural open spaces in and around San Diego are a prized natural resource for area hikers, and author Sheri McGregor shows them where and how to enjoy 60 of the best trails that the city of San Diego, nearby state parks, and private ventures have to offer. Bounded by San Diego Bay and the Pacific coastline to the west, the Santa Rosa Mountains to the east, Mexico to the south, and the lower reaches of the Los Angeles metro area to the north, the 60-mile radius beyond San Diego creates a small, but rich wedge of scenic, natural wealth. Whether readers are experienced hikers or a casual day-hikers, 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: San Diego is the perfect tool to explore it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most upt-to-date guidebook - wonderful descriptions!, February 27, 2005
Sheri McGregor's book is wonderful. I picked up a copy after seeing her on local TV and am very glad I did. This book's unique among hiking books. It not only gives great description of trails and information about how easy or strenuous each trail is, but Ms. McGregor goes beyond that and points out so many local native plants, wildlife, with interesting information about them. She writes in such descriptive, vivid language, I feel like I am reliving the experience when I go back and re-read about the hike.

One of the best features about this guide is it is so up to date. So much has chenged since the horrible 2003 wildfires. This book has those changes. I am thrilled to see (finally) an up-to-date hiking guidebook for San Diego.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonders of nature, November 5, 2004
The author of this guide has put together a sensory smorgasbord for anyone who loves the outdoors. She details the flowers and plants you'll see (no more do you have to wonder what that fuzzy gray-green plant is, she tells you!), birds and other wildlife, challenges of the terrain, and where to find a spectacular view. Cross-referenced lists help you choose which hike to do (or helps you prioritize--I want to do all of them!) Best of all, she covers the damage from the 2003 wildfires around San Diego, so the book is way ahead of other guides right now. This guide took this New Englander from "Man, southern California is so dry" to amazement at the variety the San Diego area has to offer, from coastline to forest to mountains.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent hikes if you plan well, March 18, 2005
By M. E. Perry (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The trails described in this book are excellent places to hike in San Diego. The directions and difficulty ratings are very clear, and it's a good idea to carry the book with you when you hike since many of the routes require careful attention to landmarks along the way. However, not all hikes are actually within 60 miles of San Diego. It can take more than 2 hours to reach many of these trailheads - while the hikes are often worth the drive, it's best to map out the driving time before you leave the house. That way you won't run out of daylight or patience before you have completed the adventure!
