When I first saw this on 60 Minutes, it was really jarring. Imagine seeing YOUR neighbor being interviewed on 60 Minutes. For seven years, my neighbor was David Fanene and his family. They lived on the opposite side of a stream from my family. Our daughters played together all the time. Jonathan used to cut my grass to make a few bucks. Now Jnathan plays for the Cincinatti Bengals.Living in Samoa, we were accustomed to seeing stand-out athletes. My own daughter set a Canadian Record for 12 year-old girls discus last year But watching our old neighbor on 60 Minutes was surreal! Well worth watching, it gives one a glimpse into what life is like down there.

Football Island is the first video I have seen that takes a look at the Samoan influence on football programs today. As a high school football coach in Anchorage, AK I work with many Polynesian student-athletes. Before moving here I had little interaction with this culture. I soon realized that not only were these kids great athletes, but fun-loving, hard working, and very competitive. These characteristics make great teammates on our football team. It was nice to see and hear some of the history behind their culture because it helped me realize what a unique group of people I have the pleasure to work with.
